Praia de Fora and Praia do Farol, Ilha do Mel (PR)

Ilha do Mel (‘Honey Island’) is located in the Brazilian state of Paraná. The island is at a distance of about 100 km east of the state capital, Curitiba. The island may be reached by a ferry from the historic city of Paranaguá.  A large part of the 2585 hectares is protected area; the minor part is very popular among tourists from Brazil and from abroad. From Paranaguá, the visitor may opt for two destinations: Encantadas or Brasília. Form Brasília a light tower (‘farol’) may be visited, as well as some beaches. The route to the tower follows an unpaved path along a large number of pousadas (hostels), souvenir shops, bars and restaurants. The picture is taken from the farol, where both the beaches of Praia de Fora and Praia do Farol are observed.

Palácio Tiradentes (RJ)

The original building at this location  contained a prison, where Tiradentes – leader of the Inconfidência Mineira (revolt against the Portuguese colonial government – was imprisoned. He was hanged and quartered on 21 April 1792.
The building served as an imperial parliament until its demolition in 1922. The actual building, in eclectic style, was inaugurated in 1926. It served as the National Congress building until 1960. Because of the transfer of the Brazilian capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília and the creation of the state of Guanabara (Former Federal District), the building became the seat of the Guanabara state government. Since the merger of Guanabara with Rio de Janeiro in 1975, Palácio Tiradentes became the seat of the Rio de Janeiro state government.

COLORFUL BRAZIL: Jardim Botânico, Curitiba (PR)

Jardim Botânico, CURITIBA (PR)

The Botanical Garden in Curitiba is an ideal location to free your mind, to enjoy some relaxing moments. The Garden is easily reached by bus from downtown or from the railway station. It is an open garden, free of charge. Principal attraction is the greenhouse, a copy of the London Chrystal Palace.  I found this colorful flower inside this greenhouse, on a rainy day. While giant raindrops were falling on the glass, people sheltering for the rain admired the colorful beauty of tropical plants and flowers.

Botanical Garden, Curitiba

Curitiba, history and tourism
