SEPTEMBER 2005: Barman
Conceição de Ibitipoca is a small village that is considered to be the main gate to Ibitipoca Park at the border between the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. It is quite hard to reach this village by car, because of the terrible quality of the entrance road. In 2005, this paved road had too many bumps and holes, and our driver had to slow down to almost walking speed in order not to damage her car. Most of the time, she had to maneuver the car on the margins, or even on the other side of the two-lane road. Therefore, it was no surprise that she really needed a strong drink that night. However, you won’t find too many bars and restaurants in the small village. She finally found a small bar, at the end of a narrow street. There were few guests, who enjoyed their ice-cold beer. The very talkative barman appeared to be an artist too: he created wood carvings from tree branches and roots. On this picture, he demonstrated one of his – unfinished – creations.
