JULY 2006: MISTique
On our way from Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais) to Salvador (Bahia), we had crossed the border of the two states during the night. When we opened our sleepy eyes early in the morning, with the first glimpse of daylight, we had to rub our eyes one more time. We tried to clean the bus window with a blanket. It didn’t help, the vision was still blurry. There was dense mist! Mist is not something you would expect easily in a tropical country, such as Brazil. Even in the Brazilian winter, mist is not common. However, in South Brazil, where the climate is much more moderate, you might see some mist. Bahia is one of the states in the North East, it won’t freeze there. But there was mist… Grazing cows without legs seemed to hover over the meadows, only the tops of the palm trees were visible, it was quite a weird landscape. We pinched each other in the arm, but the mist had proven to be real.
