SEPTEMBER 2006: Sports stadiums
Next to the campus of the Federal Univerity is Brazil’s third largest soccer stadium: Estádio Governor Magelhães Pinto, better known as the Mineirão. At that time, the stadium had a capacity of seventy thousand people. Mineirão was one of the stadiums in which World Cup 2014 soccer matches were projected to be played. At least some group matches and one of the semi finals. In 2006, it was not decided yet whether the stadium should be renovated or that a new stadium should be constructed at a location outside the city. Left of the Mineirão stadium is the smaller Mineirinho gymnasium. Its official name is Ginásio Jornalista Felipe Drumond, and can accommodate more than twenty thousand spectators for indoor sports and events. Part of Pampulha Lake is visible in the foreground of this picture. The water level was significantly lowered, because of intensive clean-up of the artificial lake.
