OCTOBER 2006: Fishing woman
Fisherwomen are known to us, but fishing women? A fisherman appears to be a male affair. If not in Belo Horizonte, at Pampulha Lake. This fishing woman is certainly no exception. On Sundays (they usually work as a cleaner or nanny on weekdays and on Saturdays), they fish and are accompanied by their spouse and children. Sometimes hubby is also fishing enthusiastically, but most of the men prefer to rest under a palm tree and take a nap. When you pay a closer look, you will notice that they don’t use advanced carbon fiber fishing rods, but very simple bamboo stalks. With a nylon thread and a home-made hook. The fish are collected in empty PET bottles. But… is fishing allowed at the lake? No. Unfortunately, the lake is still polluted with a continuous flow of waste water from neighboring municipalities. It is not advisable to consume these fish, but the fishing men and women still manage to stay alive.
