085. Giraffe
OCTOBER 2006: Giraffe
Many books and websites will inform you that a giraffe’s tongue measures more than 40 centimeters. A respectable length. For a respectably tall animal. You may find some giraffes at the local Zoo in Belo Horizonte. They roam freely inside their large, fenced pasture. They receive their daily food in a rack, which is assembled some meters above the ground. It is interesting to observe how the giraffes pick the food with their tongue. Quite a number of animals in the Belo Horizonte Zoo have some freedom within their large habitats. In fact, only some bird species, reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies are living in completely covered areas. The large feline animal pits do not have bars, but these big cats are living on hilly islands with a deep, excavated trench. I was able to photograph them without being annoyed by bars or wires. The giraffe on the photo appeared to joke with me: he stuck his huge tongue at me.
