NOVEMBER 2006: Core
Praça da Liberdade in Belo Horizonte is one of the tourist attractions in the city. The city park on the large square invites many tourists for a stroll or for a rest. Several former (State of Minas Gerais) government buildings surround the square. The principal building is the palace where – until recently – the state government resided. In recent years, the buildings have been converted into museums and cultural centers. One of the museums is the Mineralogy Museum, which hosts interesting collections of minerals and gem stones, excavated in Minas Gerais. The state is rich in a large variety and volume of gem stones and minerals, including diamonds, gold, quartz, topaz. One may find a striking art piece next to the museum’s entrance. It appears a giant orange, of which one part is cut out. More probably, the sphere represents the earth, and the cut out part shows what to expect in the earth’s core.
