NOVEMBER 2007: Toddler with turban
This toddler was spotted on the day of the Zumbi Parade in Belo Horizonte. The parade was to honor the slave resistance leader Zumbi who was betrayed, captured, and executed late seventeenth century. Many folkloric groups, accompanied by a number of percussionist and dance groups, from Belo Horizonte and from the interior of Minas Gerais, participated in this colorful parade on a sunny day. The toddler wore light blue clothes and a white turban, but this has nothing to do with India. However, he is wearing the typical robes of a folkloric group that originates from Salvador: the afoxé band Filhos do Gandhy (Gandhi’s Sons), to honor the Indian pacifist. Other folkloric groups have copied the clothes, like the toddler’s group. The little boy seemed somewhat distracted: instead of performing a drum session, the little drumsticks rested on his drum.
