APRIL 2008: Bean Bags
Visiting a local Brazilian market is a real treat for many tourists: a great variety in colors, shapes and flavors. Generally, you will find there mainly fruit, vegetables, herbs, meat and fish. However, you can also buy candy, crafts, souvenirs, and household items at such markets (‘mercado central’, ‘mercado municipal’ or ‘mercado público’ in Portuguese). Nationally known are the markets in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Salvador, but they are also found in other major cities. Such as in Curitiba, capital of Paraná. This market is located near the railway station, not far from downtown. What struck me then, was that there were dozens of different types of beans, in addition to the traditional black and brown beans, offered in large burlap bags.
