MARCH 2008: Candles
Many tourist are amazed to find so many churches in downtown Rio de Janeiro. For them, it appears that almost every saint is represented by at least one church. The churches attract many visitors. They are not only tourists that admire the richness of the paintings, the sculptures, the stained glass windows, and the numerous statues. These churches represent a wide range of architectural styles, interspersed with typical Brazilian elements. Besides the many (international) tourists, the churches welcome a large number of believers too. They not only come for the masses, but also for their personal prayers, and for lighting candles for the memory of their deceased loved ones, or for a personal request, or as a gratitude, or for spiritual assistance. Particularly on Mondays, many candles are lit, and people often have to queue to light their candles.
