211. Horses 

AUGUST 2009: Horses 

Tiradentes is a historic town in Minas Gerais. It is located near São João del Rei, another well-known historic town, and about 200 km south of state capital Belo Horizonte. In the past, the town was called Arraial Velho de Santo Antônio, later renamed in Vila de São José do Rio das Mortes, and in Sao José del Rei. The current name is due to the revolutionary leader Tiradentes, who headed a rebellion in 1792 against Portuguese rule, and was later sentenced to death. The town still has many monuments of that time, mainly in the Baroque style. No wonder that many Brazilian and foreign tourists spend their leisure time in Tiradentes, and many opt for a comfortable ride in a carriage, drawn by two horses. The horse couple in the picture had a moment to have some rest.

APRIL 2009: Toy truck 

Guarapari, located in the state of Espírito Santo, is a very popular beach resort. Especially for mineiros (residents of the neighboring state of Minas Gerais), since this huge state – equivalent of the surface of France and Switzerland together – has no coastline. Therefore, it is not surprising that the town has many hotels, inns, restaurants and bars. Many owners are mineiros, and many refreshments typical of Minas Gerais can be found there. For this, the mineiros will feel themselves at home on the beach of the neighboring state. You’ll find lots of families with children there. The kids are thrilled to be able to play on the beach. They bring along their own toys. Like this yellow dump truck, which has proved useful for transporting beach sand. But where is the little owner?

FEBRUARY 2009: Cycling toddler

Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais, is built in a hilly landscape. Virtually every street or avenue in the metropolis has one or more slopes. Therefore, you need supportive footwear for daily walks. The south of the city is built on the slopes of Serra do Curral, a small mountain range with peaks up to 1700 meters. The road from downtown to Mangabeiras Park, six kilometers away, is one big slope. A large square is located just in front of the park: Praça do Papa, from which you may enjoy a magnificent view of the city center. The square is an ideal location for various forms of leisure and entertainment. You’ll find skaters, slack line acrobats, kite runners, and cyclists. My camera located this toddler who rode his rounds on his bike with training wheels.

MAY 2009: Carlos Drummond de Andrade

Carlos Drummond de Andrade is one of Brazil’s best-known poets. He was born in Itabira, a mining town near Belo Horizonte. His works are mostly about love, writing poetry, and about everyday life. His works are a major source of inspiration for many Brazilians. In the city of Itabira, you can walk along a route over forty placards with Carlos’ poems. Also his birthplace and residence are free to visit. On top of Pico do Amor, a large hill in Itabira, is a museum with a large collection of Carlos’ life and work. Carlos himself is immortalized, seated on top of the hill, while reading, with a splendid view on the mining town.

JANUARY 2009: Clown

It is sad that more than more than forty thousand fatalities are counted annually in the Brazilian traffic. Some measures have been improved to improve road safety in Brazil, but it’s not sufficient and effective . Alcohol and mobile phone use are still major causes of fatal accidents. Therefore, initiatives at local level emerge to reduce the high number of casualties. When I was in Olinda in January 2009, I noticed this funny clown. He was hired by the city of Olinda to make passersby aware, in a playful way, of their traffic behavior and how to behave properly in traffic.
