217. Down the stairs
AUGUST 2009: Down the stairs
In August 2009,a good friend of mine from the Netherlands came to visit me in Belo Horizonte. It was his first encounter with Brazil, and I promised him to arrange an attractive tourist program. One week was spent in Maceió, in northeast Brazil, and the remaining three weeks were spent in Belo Horizonte and neighboring cities. Almost all the historic towns in the vicinity of the capital were visited. Congonhas, Sabara, Sao Joao del Rei, Tiradentes, Ouro Preto, and Mariana. Mariana was founded more than three hundred years ago, and was the first capital of Minas Gerais, until neighboring Ouro Preto was chosen to be the new capital. The historic town of Mariana is well preserved, and hosts many historic buildings and churches. One of the most appealing churches is the Basílica São Pedro dos Clérigos. The impressive building is to be reached after a long climb, and it is even possible to climb the tower. When my friend began his descent, I took this photo.
