JULY 2009: Orange flower
A major advantage of winter in a tropical country like Brazil is that there are also blooming trees and plants in the winter. Yellow elm for example, one of Brazil’s national trees, blooms profusely in the winter months of July and August. The bright pink, white and yellow flowers are in sharp contrast with the deep blue, dry winter sky. Another flowering tropical plant that you may encounter in the winter is the hibiscus. The red variety is most common, but you also may observe other colors: yellow, pink or orange. The flower is very popular as a natural medicine and is often consumed as a tea.
