315: JK Statue
Undoubtedly the best-known resident of Diamantina, a historic mining town in the heart of Minas Gerais, was former President Juscelino Kubitschek. Born just after the turn of the century, in 1902, and moved at a young age.to the young capital Belo Horizonte where he worked as a doctor. Soon, Juscelino began his political career; ten years later he became Mayor of Belo Horizonte. One of his legacies is the architectural complex of Pampulha, designed by Niemeyer. His career continued as Governor of Minas Gerais, and in 1955 he was installed as President of Brazil. He opposed the military dictatorship, and was even imprisoned for a short while. In 1976, Juscelino died in an obscure car accident. His statue is in a prominent place in Diamantina.
