011: Castle Rock

Lake Powell, on the border between Arizona and Utah, is the result of submerging the Glen Canyon in 1963. The artificial lake, which is hundreds of meters deep at certain points, now attracts about two million tourists a year. The large majority of tourists join a boat tour on the calm water, past the pastel-covered sandstone cliffs, which reveal millions of years of geological history. The tour boats can be found in Page, a town that was founded for the housing of the workers who participated in the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam. One of the most striking rocks in Lake Powell is Castle Rock. The photo almost seems to have an optical illusion, if you look closely at the rock in the middle. It looks as if there is a stone arch.

335: Basketball Court

It was on a hot summer Saturday in January, when I was invited for a birthday barbecue at an exclusive club in Belo Horizonte. It was a former student of mine, who would celebrate his birthday, in the presence of his family and close friends. His family was a long-time member of the club, and I received one of the few guest entrance passes. Such a club usually hosts a wide range of leisure facilities for the entire family. At least large swimming pools, which are very welcome on the hot summer days. You can find a great number of loungers around the pool, and there are at least some barbecue facilities too. What is a club party without a barbecue? Brazilians love barbecues, and will find any occasion to have another barbecue, accompanied by many bottles of beer and cachaça (a kind of cane sugar gin). Sportive members will enter the soccer pitch, the tennis, peteca, or basketball courts, as shown in the picture.
