003: Fisherman in his boat
The almost nine hundred km-long Douro river is the third largest on the Iberian Peninsula. The Douro Valley is famous for its vineyards, and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List, as well as the Historic Center of Porto is. The valley provide excellent conditions for the cultivation of almonds, olives, and especially grapes. The grapes are essential for the world famous Port wines, which are stored and traded in Vila Nova de Gaia, that is located at the margin of the Douro River, opposite to the city of Porto. Not only wine production is important in Porto. Along the Douro River, there are many small and somewhat larger fishing boats. The fisherman in the picture is checking his fishing rod and nets. The name of his boat is not very surprising: ‘Douro’.
