341: Catedral Metropolitana
The current cathedral was built between 1932 and 1938 on the spot where stood Igreja de Santo Antônio do Tijuco, which was constructed around 1750. This church was built of wood and adobe. The richly decorated pillars and ornaments in this church were covered with gold leaf. Nevertheless, this church was demolished. The new cathedral is painted in the main colors blue and white according to the local tradition. Inside the church decorations and ornaments have been made in the baroque style, which is also found in other prominent churches in the historic towns of Minas Gerais. The authentic baroque style is associated with the famous artist of that time: Antonio Francisco Lisboa, better known as Aleijadinho.
