008: Bathtub Restaurant
Bernkastel – situated in the Moselle Valley, about 50 km from Trier – is world famous for wine production. Vineyards occupy almost 6000 ha within the Bernkastel area. Although being one of the smallest (68 ha only), Bernkasteler Badstube is one of the better known vineyards. Most probably, the name is derived from the Medieval Age, when hot springs were used for bathing and recreation. The soil is rich in essential minerals, ideal for quality wine production such as the kabinett. The principal grape species grown here is the Riesling. Badstube is German for bathtub, and therefore the sign board of an Italian restaurant in the historic center of Bernkastel is showing a couple enjoying a nice bath. It’s hard to imagine that customers will enjoy a relaxing bath when eating delicious pasta dishes in this restaurant.
