031: Police patrolling

It was on a cold but sunny day in March, when I visited The Hague. I walked around in the small center with a large number of historic building, like the Binnenhof, and the Canal District. Later that day, I continued my travel by tram to the famous beaches of Scheveningen. That day, it was rather quiet in the streets, it was a normal working day. I was able to take many pictures with my compact digital camera, there not many people that could suddenly appear in front of the camera lens. However, I was cautious enough not to draw too much attention. You’ll never know if there is a thief or a pickpocket that has chosen you as their next victim. Every time, when I had finished a short session of taking pictures, I put my camera back in my backpack. Like my routine in my city Belo Horizonte, and other Brazilian cities when I was visiting them. At the moment of this picture, I was quite assured that no one would rob me, because of the two police officers walking in front of me.

Imaging Brazil 368: Cathedral Roof in Petrópolis, RJ (2012)

368: Cathedral roof

The construction of t he imperial city of Petrópolis started in 1843, when Pedro II issued a decree for a settlement, and for the construction of a summer palace.  It is considered as the second planned – after Recife by the Dutch – city in Brazil. Initially, the mother church was planned near the imperial palace, according to the urbanization plan by Major Júlio Frederico Koeler. However, the construction of a new church was reconsidered and only in 1884, the current building of the cathedral was started. The Neo-Gothic building, inspired upon the classical Gothic churches in northern France. In 1925, the cathedral was inaugurated, and only in 1969, the church tower was completed. In 1921, the remains of emperor Pedro II and his wife, Teresa Christina, were buried in the cathedral. in 1971, the remains of Princess Isabel and her husband Gaston d”Eu were transferred to the imperial mausoleum. It is allowed to climb the cathedral tower, from where this picture was taken, showing t he red-tiled cathedral roof.
