386: Itapemirim River
The Itapemirim River is a small river, measuring little over 200 km only, which flows in the south of the state of Espírito Santo. At the margins of the Itapemirim River, at a waterfall, the city of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim was founded. It was mentioned in 1819 by governor Francisco Alberto Rubim, who may be considered as the founder of the city, The first house was built in 1849, but it lasted until 1867 when the city was receiving local government. At present, the city hosts more than 200 thousand inhabitants, and has become an important center for granite and marble production and hosts one of Brazil’s largest interstate bus companies. It was Brazilian poet and composer Vinicius de Moraes who named Cachoeiro de Itapemirim as the ‘Secret Capital of the World’, without giving explanation for his nomination.
