387: Tar footsteps
Belo Horizonte is built on a number of hills, and is therefore hard to move around when you are confined to a wheelchair, dependent of a cane or guide, or when you are less mobile. Not only the sometimes very steep hills are a problem, but also the pavements that show many irregularities. On many pavements, it is really hard to move on, to avoid obstacles or holes. The city of Belo Horizonte is gradually improving the sidewalks, but there is only very slow progress. However, many sidewalks in principal streets and avenues have been refurbished and now show big improvement for the less mobile people. The photograph shows one of such improvements, with nivellation of the sidewalk to the street level, and with special tiles for the blind. This newly constructed location shows the result of mass behavior of impatient and ignorant people: they preferred to get tar on their shoes rather than to walk some meters more to a cleaner sidewalk.
