024: Piece of nature
Gerolstein is a small German town in the Vulkaneiffel District, near the borders with Belgium and Luxemburg. The District is surronded by the Rhine, Ahr, and Mosel Rivers. The region was already inhabited thousands of years ago, in the Stone Age and in the Bronze age. It was named in the 12th century, with the name Burg Gerhardstein. It took two centuries until town rights were granted. The town got destroyed three times – by war action or by fires – in the 17th and 18th century. The Celts and Romans had already discovered spring water, which now has become the basis for the mineral water industry in Gerolstein. From Gerolstein, there are several trails and tracks in the natural environment of the Eiffel District. The photograph was taken in a park in Gerolstein.
