389: Teatro Municipal
Teatro Municipal, which is located in Cinelândia, is one of the principal theaters in Brazil. Construction began in 1905, and in 1909, it was inaugurated. The building was designed – by Francisco de Oliveira Passos – in the eclectic style, inspired by the Paris Opéra. Curiously, Francisco was son of the then mayor Francisco Pereira Passos, and it caused much controversy in the City Council, when they discovered that the winning project – ‘projeto Aguilla’ – was from the mayor’s son. The theater underwent major reforms in the seventies (1975-1978) of the past century. A more recent reform (2008-2010) included modernization of the installations. On top of the theater roof is an impressive eagle that weights no less than 350 kg, It is decorated with eith thousand 23-carat gold foils. The photograph was taken at night, with a prolonged time exposure, resulting in a dark blue sky and the theater clearly illuminated.
