384: Pink roses
When you live in the megacity of Rio de Janeiro, it is really a relief to be in a small, neighboring city for some hours. You will fully enjoy the tranquility of few people and few cars in the streets, the ability to walk around without the chance being hit by fellow pedestrians or cars. When I was in Petrópolis, I walked there a lot, also along the canals of Avenida Koeller, Rua da Imperatriz, and Rua do Imperador. You can find many interesting big houses, constructed during the imperial era, along theses canals. Along another canal, you can visit a brewery and taste a fresh beer. It was along one of these canals that I found three beautiful, bright pink roses, as seen in the photograph.

382: Bromeliad
During my stay in Belo Horizonte, I must have visited the Botanical Garden more than ten times. This botanical garden is part of the local ZOO, and is located at the margin of Lake Pampulha. Although this garden is not as big as its counterpart in Rio de Janeiro, the garden hosts an interesting collection of a broad variety of plants and flowers. During each visit, I took dozens of photographs of the plants and flowers in various shapes and hues. When I visited the greenhouses, orchids and bromeliads attracted my attention. There are over 3400 bromeliad species, and the most familiar specie is the delicious pineapple. They are able to store water at their leaf bases. Bromeliads are mainly found in the American tropics and may host bright colorful flowers, like the red flower in this photograph.

372: Blue lilies
Blue lilies are quite common in Brazilian parks and gardens, but they are not native Brazilian plants. These lilies are called Agapanthus praecox, or African lily, or Lily of the Nile. However, they are also not native along the margins of the Nile River; their origin is in the far south of the African continent, in Natal and in Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. The lily now has been naturalized in various countries across the world, like the United Kingdom, Mexico, New Zealand, Ethiopia, and Costa Rica. The lily has about ten long, leathery leaves and may reach up to one meter. They usually flower between December and February. The two blue lilies in the photograph were found in the campus of the Federal University, near the Economic Sciences Faculty. The lilies are also found along the nearby Pampulha Lake.

367: Pink winter blossom
Praça da Liberdade in Belo Horizonte is one of the most popular locations for both tourists and belohorizontinos. The big square is decorated as a park, and is cut in the middle by a cobble-stone-paved lane flanked by tall imperial palm trees. The square is surrounded by historical buildings that once were part of the state government. The main building is the governmental palace, that is still in use. The other buildings have been transformed into cultural centers and museums. The former Secretariate of Treasury (Secretária da Fazenda) is transformed into Memorial Minas Gerais-Vale. A museum – maintained and sponsored by Vale Company – that represents the history and heritage of the state of Minas Gerais. In winter, the ipê rosa (Handroanthus heptaphyllus), or Black Lapacho blooms with bunches of bright pink tubular flowers, which creates a colorful contrast with pale yellowish plaster of the historic building, with the 1897 cornerstone that marked the start of the construction of Belo Horizonte.

025: Colorful tulips
One of the most popular tourist locations is the Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market), which is located at the Singel between Koningsplein and Muntplein. Founded in 1862, The flower market was gradually transformed from a trees and plants market into a flower market where you can buy a wide variety of freshly cut flowers, flower bulbs, and souvenirs. The flower market is the world’s only floating market. The plants and flowers had to be transported by boats, and therefore the stalls are still established on large boats in the Singel. Even in winter, you can find fresh tulips in various colors, as seen in the picture.

346: White calla lily
This beautiful, creamy white calla lily was found in Parque Municipal in Belo Horizonte. These lilies are originally from Southern Africa, and are very popular among florists. They are strong plants with arrow-shaped leaves and a trumpet-shaped flower. By far the most well-known are the creamy white flowers, but there are also orange, green, yellow, pink, purple, light blue and dark red variants. The creamy white flowers are often associated with wedding bouquets and religious celebrations, symbolizing purity, rebirth and hope.
