313: Cactus plants at Morro da Pescaria

Guarapari is a popular beach resort in the state of Espirito Santo, at a distance of about fifty kilometers south of the capital Vitória. Especially among the mineiros (inhabitants of the neighboring state of Minas Gerais) Guarapari is very populair. Guarapari boasts some beautiful beaches, of which Praia dos Namorados and Praia do Morro are the most famous. Not far from Praia do Morro is a natural park, which is currently managed by the municipality. For a small fee, the visitor can follow a path of little more than one kilometer to a beach surrounded by natural vegetation, Praia do Ermitão. From this beach it is even possible to swim to Ilha da Raposa (‘Fox Island’). The park hosts original Atlantic Forest type and the so-called restinga type vegetations. The cactus plants on the photograph were located on one of the rocky slopes.

240: Only ring once

The town of Marechal Deodoro, located south of the city of Maceió, has a great history. It was once the capital of the – then province – Alagoas, and is the birthplace of the first president of Brazil. During my visit to the town it looked very quiet, sometimes even a little abandoned. On this sunny day with a comfortable temperature, it was a delight to stroll around. Marechal Deodoro has a number of monuments and sites where the President has left its historical traces. But there were also other interesting things to see, like this comment beside a doorbell, “Only ring once!”

JANUARY 2009: Strange cloud 

I was walking around in downtown Belo Horizonte on a sunny Saturday. I had just left Praça da Liberdade behind me. One week ago, in this square, Christmas decoration was still there, and attracted thousands of visitors each day. Many townspeople went out with their families to take dozens of snapshots for their digital family album on the Internet, especially in Orkut and Facebook. At weekends, I enjoyed much to make long walks through downtown Belo Horizonte, and most of the time I was to be found between the bus station and the Savassi neighborhood. There was always much to see, and I had my camera within reach. When I was walking in the direction of Savassi, something strange above me caught my eye. It was a long, luminous stripe. Most likely, it was a condensation cloud from an airplane, which must have flown shortly before. The strange color can be explained by the low sun in the late afternoon.
