381: Guanabara Bay
When Portuguese explorers arrived in Guanabara Bay on the first day of 1502, they initially were thinking that they had arrived at the mouth of a big river, as the story goes. But another plausible explanation for the name Rio de Janeiro is gaining support: the word for ‘sound’ and ‘bay’ at the time of the discovery was ‘ria’. January Sound, or January Bay. Soon Ria de Janeiro became Rio de Janeiro, in order to avoid confusion between the words ‘Ria’ and ‘Rio’. The bay itself gained the name Guanabara, after the indigenous Tupi word ‘goanã-pará’, which means ‘bosom of the sea’. In the photograph, the skyline of the districts Flamengo and Botafogo is visible, as well as the mountains in the Tijuca Forest and the Corcovado peak, with the statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) on the top. At the time of the photography, an airplane flew over; most probably, it had taken off only moments earlier from Santos Dumont Airport, which is located on an artificial island in Guanabara Bay.

287: Airplane
When we see a plane flying over our heads, preferably high in the blue or slightly cloudy sky, our minds are flying too: far away, as far as possible, to the destinations of our dreams. It’s hard to see on this photo which society is the owner of this plane, but probably it’s an Alitalia service, possibly on its way to the Eternal City: Rome. A flight of about ten hours, crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Only a century ago, tourists and migrants had to have a lot more patience: at that time, the same crossing took some weeks …

276: Clouds
In February 2010 I took a flight to Europe. From Belo Horizonte I had to take a domestic flight to São Paulo, where I could take the connecting flight to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, at around midnight. The flight to São Paulo takes only an hour, flying over the mountain scenery of the Minas Gerais and São Paulo states. From the small window there is a lot to see. The summer rains of the previous months were responsible for the fresh green landscape: the wooded mountains, the cultivated valleys, with small villages and towns spread around. Occasionally large cloud parties blocked the sight of this fascinating landscape. But equally interesting for me were these clouds, high in the sky.

NOVEMBER 2007: Human airplane
This picture undoubtedly needs more explanation. It was on the day that Zumbi, symbol for slave resistance in Brazil, was commemorated with a large parade. Many folkloric groups from Belo Horizonte and the state of Minas Gerais participated in this parade with a lot of traditional percussion, music and dance. Not only folkloric groups took part of the parade, also individuals walked down the avenue to the Zumbi Monument. The man on the picture was running forward and backward, thereby spreading his arms, and sometimes even screaming. Most probably he tried to mimic an airplane, complete with take-off and landing. A crazy man…
