385: Inhotim water mirror
At a short distance (60 km) from Belo Horizonte, Inhotim Park and Contemporary Open Air Museum offers a unique combination of contemporary art and nature. Art works from various artists from Brazil and abroad are found widespread in the park. One of the art works is Galeria Adriana Varejão, created in 2008 by architect Rodrigo Cerviño Lopez from São Paulo. It consists of a large, closed concrete box, with an entrance over a water mirror. That water mirror forms a prefect division with the surrounding nature. As a result, the turquoise blue hue of the water mirror creates an interesting contrast with natural green hues of the plants, as is seen in the photograph.

379: Beetles in primary colors
One of the most popular attractions in Inhotim – a park that hosts various pieces of contemporary art that are harmonized with the natural environment – is Troca-Troca (‘Change-Change’ or ‘Swapping’) by artist Jarbas Lopes (2002). Many visitors love to see the beetles (fuscas in Portuguese), made from swapped body parts that are painted in red, blue, and yellow. The cars are linked to each other through a sound system. Recently, the beetles have been repainted: the dark orange color being replaced by a red hue, as requested by the artist.

370: Sunlit spheres in Inhotim Park
In 1966, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama illegally placed 1500 stainless steel spheres on a lawn during the 33rd Venice Biennale. During the first week, she sold, like a peddler, the spheres for two dollars each, in protest against the commercialization of art. She then got expelled from the Biennale, but her work remained. In 2009, a new version of the spheres was installed in Inhotim – an institute containing a contemporary art museum integrated with a botanical garden – near Belo Horizonte. Five hundred spheres floating in a pond near the Burle Marx Educational Center, inspirational for various photographs showing reflections on the shiny spheres.

351: Colored panels
At a distance of about 60 km from Belo Horizonte, within the limits of the municipality of Brumadinho, is an interesting botanical garden as well as a contemporary art museum: Inhotim. Inhotim was created by former mining magnate Bernardo Vaz, who sold his impressive art collection and acquired a large area around his farm. At present, the area is more then twenty square kilometers. Only a small part of this vast area is publicly accessible, and contains a number of art works and art galleries that are integrated in the botanical garden, which contains more than 1500 palm tree species, the largest in the world. One of the principal art pieces consists of nine large colored panels, in a vertical position. This art piece by Hélio Oiticia (1937-1980) is called “Magic Square No. 5” (Invenção da cor, Penetrável Magic Square # 5, De Luxe , 1977). They symbolize buildings in open air, with which the visitor can feel, touch, inspire, and visualize within this labyrinth square.

340: World Cup mirror hour glass
In September 2011, a giant hourglass was set up at Praça da Liberdade in Belo Horizonte. The eight-meter-high and over four hundred kilo-heavy object contained a digital clock that counted the days until the kick-off of the first match of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The hourglass, an initiative of businessman Rene Salviano, and made by artist Vittorio Torchetti, was covered with mirror glass. Initially, everyone was enthusiastic about the new acquisition, but just two years later the object was a beloved target of vandalism. Expressions against the World Cup were regularly sprayed on the mirror glass. For me it was an interesting object to play with reflections as you can see in the photo.

246: Prophet Jonas
The historic city of Congonhas is famous for the soapstone statues of twelve prophets, sculpted by Aleijadinho two centuries ago. These statues are located in front of Santuário de Bom Jesus de Matosinhos. Obviously the first letters of the prophets form the name of Aleijadinho. And one of them is Jonas, who was ordered by God to go to Ninivé, but he refused. He then got swallowed by a whale, but he survived. He eventually fulfilled God’s will and went to that Assyrian-dominated city. The moral of this story was forgiveness. He is looking upward, into the sky, as if he was communicating with God. When observing the weather-worn statues, I was wondering how the statues would have looked at the time of their creation, two centuries ago.

208. Carlos Drummond de Andrade
MAY 2009: Carlos Drummond de Andrade
Carlos Drummond de Andrade is one of Brazil’s best-known poets. He was born in Itabira, a mining town near Belo Horizonte. His works are mostly about love, writing poetry, and about everyday life. His works are a major source of inspiration for many Brazilians. In the city of Itabira, you can walk along a route over forty placards with Carlos’ poems. Also his birthplace and residence are free to visit. On top of Pico do Amor, a large hill in Itabira, is a museum with a large collection of Carlos’ life and work. Carlos himself is immortalized, seated on top of the hill, while reading, with a splendid view on the mining town.

203. Twelve prophets
AUGUST 2009: Twelve prophets
Minas Gerais host some very interesting historic towns: Ouro Preto, Mariana, Diamantina, Tiradentes, Sabara, Sao Joao del Rei and Congonhas. Congonhas, located on the historic route “Estrada Real” between Diamantina and Rio de Janeiro, famous for the sanctuary (Basilica) of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, the statues of twelve prophets, and six chapels with seven performances of the Cross. The sanctuary included in The UNESCO World Heritage List. The prophets – Isaiah, Jeremiah, Baruch, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Obadiah, Amos, Jonah, Nahum and Habakkuk – and the Cross were carved in Baroque style by master sculptor Aleijadinho. The soapstone statues of the prophets are quite affected through the test of time; how would these statues have looked like at the beginning of the eighteenth century, when they just had been carved?
