007: Foz do Douro sunset

The city of Porto is located at the Douro River, that ends in the Atlantic Ocean. However, Foz do Douro, that is also part of the city of Porto, is located at the mouth of the Douro River, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. A perfect location to watch an amazing, colorful sunset. That day, the ocean was very calm with little waves. Although it was November, it was quite warm that day and it was still a bit warm at sunset. The warm colors of this sunset also helped to feel ourselves warm. I was imagining what lies beyond the horizon, like people must have been imagining before the discovery of America more than five hundred years ago. That time, I could not have imagined that I would visit Portugal’s former colony Brazil, and even would live there, at the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. From where I can imagine the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, when I am at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

005: Waves beating rocks

Porto, Portugal’s second city, is located at the Atlantic Ocean. While the historic center is located at the margins of the Douro River, at some kilometers from the ocean, Foz do Douro is located at the mouth of the river, where it meets the ocean. The city itself doesn’t host many beaches, the nearest place is Espinho, at about 25 km south of Porto. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy beach moments in Foz do Douro. The small beach, with clumps of rocks spread along the shoreline, provides beautiful views of the ocean, especially during sunset, and also spectacular view of ocean waves beating the shoreline rocks, as seen in the photo.

196. Canoa Quebrada

JANUARY 2008: Canoa Quebrada

Canoa Quebrada, a paradisaical beach resort at about 160 km from Fortaleza, state of Ceará, is known for its orange-red to reddish brown falésias (sandstone cliffs). From the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean, these colorful cliffs form a wonderful composition with the blue sky and the azure blue ocean water. From the beach,  so-called jangadas (flat-bottomed boats) are available for a short cruise. One can also take a dip (with life jacket) in the warm ocean water. Jangadas are part of Brazilian history: at the time of the end of slavery in Brazil, the leader of the jangada sailors – Chico da Matilde, known as “Dragão do Mar” – and his colleagues no longer accepted slave transports. This was the beginning of the total abolition of slavery in Ceará, and in Brazil.

173. Ocean warrior

JULY 2008: Ocean warrior

In July 2008, I visited the small state of Alagoas. I joined a large group of students  who had their annual meeting in Maceió, the capital. While many students fulfilled their obligatory participation in presentations and forum discussions, I traveled with a select group to Coruripe, a seaside town at about a hundred km south of Maceió. In Maceió, it was raining for some time, and half of this group decided not to go anymore. According to them,it made no sense to enjoy the beach while it is raining. The remainder of the group, myself included, decided to go to Coruripe anyway. We hired a car and driver that took us quickly to Coruripe. In the small town we located a cheap restaurant where we had a hot meal. We then started our walk of more than six km along the pristine beaches, in the direction of Maceió.  Near Coruripe, there was a huge concrete construction as part of a seawall, on which the rough waves of the Atlantic were pounding. One of us could not resist the temptation to challenge the ocean. He took a fighting position, while one of the many waves hit him fully. I passed these waves at a longer and much safer distance…

Imaging Brazil 104: Pine Tree in Florianópolis, SC (2007)

104. Pine tree

MAY 2007: Pine tree

When you will meet this pine tree, you won’t imagine yourself in the tropics. This pine tree, however,  was found on Santa Catarina Island, near Pântano do Sul Beach. This beach is one of the more than forty beaches on this island, within reach from the city of Florianópolis. Pântano do Sul Beach is flanked by some green hills. I had climbed one of these hills; from the top, the view on Pântano do Sul Beach and the Atlantic Ocean was breathtaking. When we were back on the beach, we didn’t allow ourselves a lot of rest; we continued our walk for another six kilometers to another beach, were a number of our friends were waiting for us.

BRAZILIAN PORTRAITS: Man at Gunga Beach (AL)

Without doubt, Gunga Beach is a paradisaical beach. The beach is located south of Maceió, capital of the state of Alagoas. Gunga Beach may be reached by a ferry from Barra de São Miguel or by car over an unpaved road through private area.
Gunga Beach is flanked by a large area of palm trees, providing an interesting contrast of dark green against white of beach sand. When we walked on the beach, we met this man. He was selling local handicraft as a kind of souvenir of Alagoas. His merchandise consisted of small glass bottles that were filled with colored sand. The colors compositions represent landscapes of that state. The Atlantic Ocean, beach, palm trees, local houses. This man was very talkative to us and explained that he had shaven his name in his beard. It was not easy to read – and I do not remember his name anymore – and he was about to shave it off the next day….

Dragonfly on a Hand at Itapuã Beach, SALVADOR (BA)

Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, and former capital of Brazil, is very popular among (foreign) tourists. Many tourist will go for the beautiful beaches near Salvador. Beaches as Praia Forte, Stella Maris, Itapuã.
Itapuã Beach is about 25 km north from Salvador. During weekends and holidays, the beach can be overcrowded.  When I was there in July 2006, it was rather quiet on the beach. I made some walks with Brazilian friends. I took some photographs of the coconut trees, and suddenly my eye caught a dragonfly on the beach. Quite a large dragonfly. It did not move, and would not move anymore. One friend had put the dragonfly on his and, and thus I managed to immortalize this poor creature…

COLORFUL BRAZIL: Walk of Fame at Canoa Quebrada Beach (CE)?

Walk of Fame at Canoa Quebrada Beach? (CE)

Once a simple village of fishermen, now one of the most beloved beach locations in Brazil, about 165 km east of Fortaleza. One man – Francisco José do Nascimento – was born here, whose refusal to participate in slave transport gave him the nickname “Dragão do Mar”, Sea Dragon. It was not until the seventies of the past century when the small village was discovered by hippies, and not much later by European (most French) film makers. Believe it or not, the main avenue in Canoa Quebrada is called Broadway. Indeed, a relatively wide avenue. Very quiet at day. Only a few people will be met then. Maybe a number of tourists at the small local supermarket. At night, tourist know to find the bars, the restaurants, the night clubs. When I was there with a large group of students, we enjoyed the bars at night, and went to visit the night clubs after midnight. We jumped from a reggae bar to a night club with dance music, and back to reggae, followed by more dance, and even more reggae. Almost all night long. Talking about Broadway… We observed this curvy path near the beach. A cobble stone path, full of stars, as I have seen earlier in Los Angeles. This beach path should be called the walk of fame? At least, it was me who had walked there…

COLORFUL BRAZIL: Ocean Warrior in Coruripe, Alagoas (AL)

Coruripe, ALAGOAS (AL)

Coruripe is located at about 100 km south of Maceió, capital of the state of Alagoas.  When I was there in July 2008, the city was constructing a light tower, which is now a landmark of Coruripe. Together with three friends, I walked along the beach, northward, in the direction of Maceió. We walked along pristine beaches, deserted beaches. Almost no one there, just our footprints. Sometimes we had to cross barriers, such as a quay near Coruripe. The waves were pounding there with astonishing force. I was cautious enough – also because of my camera – to avoid these waves. One of us could not resist, and started to challenge the waves. As a primitive warrior, he stood there, and cheered when he had beaten another wave. And I could not resist this unique moment of a warrior challenging the waves.
I was both amazed and shocked to notice large amounts of waste on the deserted beaches. Not only left behind by tourists, but it also must have been deposited by the waves, from distant locations. We all need to become warriors to battle pollution on the beautiful beaches.

COLORFUL BRAZIL: São José de Ribamar, Maranhão (MA)

São José do Ribamar, Maranhão (MA)

The city of São José de Ribamar is located 32 km east of São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão. It all started with a legend: a ship from Portugal was in immediate danger at the coast of what is now São José de Ribamar. The desperate crew prayed hard to Saint Joseph, patron saint of travelers. They made a promise to construct a chapel at the site if they would survive the tempest. Almost immediately, the sea became calm again. The crew fulfilled their promise and constructed a chapel on the island of São Luís. They brought a statue of St. Joseph from Lisbon, and placed in the little church, face seaward. The residents of the settlement were thinking that the statue should belong to a hermit, and brought it to him. The next day, the statue was gone, and was found again in the little chapel. The residents returned the statue to the hermit again, and left some people behind to keep an eye on the statue. St. Joseph moved himself, his staff becoming a light beacon, back to the little chapel, accompanied by the saints and angels. Since 1757, three churches had been constructed at the site, facing landward. It still remains a mystery that these churches quickly became ruins. The actual church was constructed, facing seaward, in 1915. And survived. In front of this church, now landmark of the city, are eight statues that show moments of life of St. Joseph. Next to the church is a ‘Casa dos Milagres’, the ‘House of Wonders’, where believers pray and leave notes in the hope to have the prayers fulfilled.  Close to the church, a 17.5-meter high statue of St. Joseph and his Son (Jesus) overlooks the city and the beach.

COLORFUL BRAZIL: Sailing on Rio Preguiças, the Lazy River (MA)

Rio Preguiças, Maranhão (MA)

Rio Preguiças, the Lazy River,  has a length of only 120 km, runs along Barreirinhas (gateway to the dune landscape of National Park Lençóis Maranhenses), and ends in the Atlantic Ocean, near Atins. The distance between the locations is only 16 kilometers in a straight line, but when following the strong meandering river, the distance is 42 kilometers long. The river flows very slowly. You may even wonder to which direction the river flows. At low tide the flow is seaward, into the Atlantic Ocean; at high tide the flow is in opposite direction, landward. Hence, boat tours can only be performed at certain hours. In our case, our departure time at Barrerinhas was at dawn and at Atins after midnight.

COLORFUL BRAZIL: Dirty Hands in Atins, Maranhão (MA)

Atins Beach, Maranhão (MA)

About 250 km east of São Luís, capital of the Brazilian state of Maranhão, Atins is located at the Atlantic coast, at the border of the immense dune landscape of Lençóis Maranhenses. Atins may be reached by boat from Barreirinhas, thereby following the Preguiças River. In 2007, the travel fare was 5 reais only, for a journey of four hours. Many locals use this boat, as their public transport. On the savage beach of Atins, one may located lumps of clay, which may be used as the basis for pottery. My travel companions immediately recognized the clay, and played with it. As a result: dirty, brown hands…

Barra Light Tower, SALVADOR (BA)

Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, and former capital of Brazil, is very popular among (foreign) tourists. One of the landmarks of Salvador is undoubtedly the light tower in the Barra District. This light tower, which is located inside Fortress Santo Antônio da Barra, is considered to be the oldest in Brazil. The fortress was constructed around 1596. When the Dutch invaded Salvador in 1624, they encountered no resistance from the troops at the fortress, but one year later the Dutch had to leave Salvador. Following a shipwreck in 1668, the fortress was rebuilt in 1696. The first light tower of Brazil started to work in 1698, on the base of oil that was extracted from whales. The actual structure of 22 meters high was built in 1839, the light was visible that 18 nautical miles at clear weather conditions. Only recently, the tower and the museum are again accessible for visitors. From the tower, they may enjoy a 360 degrees view of the city of Salvador, the shoreline and the Atlantic Ocean.

Canoa Quebrada (CE)

Once a simple village of fishermen, now one of the most beloved beach locations in Brazil, about 165 km east of Fortaleza. One man – Francisco José do Nascimento – was born here, whose refusal to participate in slave transport gave him the nickname “Dragão do Mar”, Sea Dragon. It was not until the seventies of the past century when the small village was discovered by hippies, and not much later by European (most French) film makers. The film crew made long hours at day, and enjoyed themselves when participating the nightlife.  The stars in the moonlight, that is one explanation for the crescent moon and the star as symbol of Canoa Quebrada. Another version might be more logical that one of the crew members was from Morocco, and that he had to pray for forgiveness to Allah after he joined the parties. He ordered to engrave the crescent moon and star, symbols of the Islam, on the cliffs.

People in Brazil: Dirty Hands in Atins (MA)

ATINS (MA)

The Brazilian state of Maranhão is widely known for hosting the immense dune landscape of Lençóis Maranhenses. From Barreirinhas – gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses -, one may join a boat trip in  the really lazy Preguiças River. The regular, and thus cheap, boat ride took more than four hours, to arrive at the final destination: Atins.
Atins is a very small coastal village, with one main road. From there, it is a short walk to the beach of Atins, and reach the Atlantic Ocean. It is not a beach with white sands and palm trees, but a rough beach, with tiny shrubs and grass growing on greyish brown sand.
Near the shoreline, one may find some clay humps, ideal for pottery. Also suitable to dirt your hands with.
The girl in this photograph demonstrates the clay that made her already tanned hands much darker.
