380: Pigeons bathing
When I was living in Belo Horizonte, most of the residences where I stayed were pretty close to the campus of the Federal University. During the weekends, I stayed in the campus for some hours. I enjoyed many walks along the various faculties that are spread over the vast campus area. Most of the area is forested, and many locations have restricted access. However, you can still see many savage and domesticated animals. One day, I suddenly met a giant lizard, a teiju, of which is told that it can act very aggressive. I also have observed many little monkeys there, playing with each other, high in the trees. And many pigeons, like this pigeon couple that had been taking a bath together, and were taking some rest until their wet feathers have dried. They remained unmoved when I approached them silently: they were really used to humans in their presence.

352: Bird at Monument
When you want to go from the center of Rio de Janeiro to Copacabana Beach, it is probable that your journey will follow the long Aterro do Flamengo. At the beginning of this urban park that is flanked by wide avenues, you will find the Museu do Arte Moderna, and next to it the immense monument that commemorates the participation and losses of Brazil in the Second World War: the ‘Monumento aos Mortos da Segunda Guerra Mundial” or “Monumento as Pracinhas”. The below grade mausoleum holds the remains of 468 soldiers of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force that died in action in Italy. Outside, there is the 31 meter high monumental portal, a granite statue representing the soldiers of the land, naval, and air forces, an abstract sculpture that represents the Brazilian Air Force, and a large mosaic that honors both the navy and merchant marine who died at sea. A long, shallow pool allows natural light in the mausoleum and regulates the temperature. At the moment of the picture, a sea gull rested on the margin of the pool.

AUGUST 2009: Rooster drinking water
Marechal Deodoro, former capital of the state of Alagoas, is located south of the actual capital, Maceió. The town is easily accessible by bus, and there are also vans available that commute between the two cities for almost the same price. The town hosts a number of interesting historical buildings, and is best known as the place of birth of the first president of Brazil, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca. Nevertheless, we noticed few tourists in the town, and it surprised us when we learned upon inquiry that there was no restaurant to find. We were forced to eat our lunch upon return in Maceió. Before we returned, we had quite a bit of walking around in the town, where we encountered this rooster drinking water.

197. Cormorant
FEBRUARY 2008: Cormorant
Pampulha Lake in Belo Horizonte attracts many day trippers and tourists who enjoy the natural beauty, the scenic beauty, or make a leisurely walk or bike ride. Especially on weekends many townspeople arrive at the lake for their leisure activities. And indeed, there is much to see and enjoy about this little piece of nature in the metropolis. Even though the lake suffers pollution because of wastewater and sewage, which are discharged into it, the lake is a favorite spot for many fish-eating birds. Likewise for the black cormorant, which reside at the lake in large numbers. It is not uncommon to see them hunting for fish, when they disappear completely under water for a few seconds. In the picture the feet of the cormorant seem to be missing, or might be fused with the twig protruding above the water.

189. Hummingbird
JULY 2008: Hummingbird
During my stay in Belo Horizonte, I was a regular visitor to the zoo and botanical garden. At least twice a year. My camera was my faithful companion. Generally, I first made pictures of plants and flowers in the botanical garden, then I made a walk along several animal shelters. I walked along the monkeys, elephants, lions, tigers, and the lonely gorilla. The botanical garden also has some – obsolete – greenhouses with a variety of plants from arid regions of the state of Minas Gerais, and from the arid northeast of the country. One of the greenhouses was covered with lush growing and blooming orange trumpetvine. There was a colorful composition of a clear blue sky with the green and bright orange of the vine. At the time I took a picture of this composition, a hummingbird was hovering over the flowers, looking for nutritious nectar.

FEBRUARY 2008: Hummingbird
Hummingbirds are common in Brazil. The tiny, speedy little birds, with their colorful feathers and long beak, are not only found in natural habitats, but they also appear in urbanized areas. Many Brazilian families have a kind of hummingbird reservoir, which consists of sugar water, and is surrounded by large colorful flowers that contain a small opening suitable for the long hummingbird beaks. In their natural habitat, the hummingbirds search for real flowers. They are perfectionists in flying and manage to hover, while their tiny wings oscillate in a very high frequency. In Belo Horizonte, I met such a hovering hummingbird, as soon on the photograph. It was hovering in the air, in search of sugar-sweet sources.
