004: Houses on a bridge
It is not common to meet houses on a bridge, but in Bad Kreuznach, they are there for centuries. These so-called Brückenhaüser were constructed on the Nahebrücke (Nahe Bridge) in the fifteenth century, whereas the bridge itself was built around 1300. The bridges on the rivers Nahe, Worth and Mulhenteich served to connect the Altstadt (Old Town) and Neustadt (New Town) in Bad Kreuznach, and with the neighboring cities of Trier and Mainz. The houses were inhabited by merchants and withstood flooding and wars. One of the bridge houses in Bad Kreuznach even has a cannonball in its wall, probably shot by Swedish troops in the seventeenth century. The bridges suffered serious damage at the end of WWII, when German troops destroyed part of them during their retreat. The damage was repaired ten years later.

JANUARY 2009: Ponte Mauricio de Nassau
The Dutch occupation of north-east Brazil (1630-1654) has a deep impact in Brazil’s history. Many Brazilians still argue that the Dutch have done many good things in the former colony. And many believe that Brazil was much better off with the Dutch occupation than with the Portuguese occupation. Recife, now capital of of the state Pernambuco, was the capital of the Dutch colony. The city expanded, and bridges were designed to link neighborhoods with each other. For example, a bridge was built between Recife and the island of Santo Antônio. The “Ponte de Recife” was partly built of stone and partly built of wood. Today, there is a 180-meter-long steel bridge named after the Dutch governor and initiator of the bridge: Maurício de Nassau.

JUNE 2005: Brazilian border
In June 2006, I stayed in Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) for one day. The following day, I returned to Brazil. Again, I crossed the border on foot. Many local workers cross this border daily. I went to the customs, to obtain my visa. For me, it was special to cross another border on foot. Previously, I had crossed the borders between the Netherlands and Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, Germany and Luxembourg, the United States and Mexico, and Italy and Vatican City on foot.

Already in 1643, when the Dutch dominated northeast Brazil, a wooden bridge was constructed to span the Capibaribe River, and to link the islands of Recife and Santo Antônio. Since then, the bridge has undergone various reforms throughout the centuries. Four statues are flanking both entrances of the bridge.
