339: Red carpet on stairs
The bus journey from Belo Horizonte to Diamantina takes about five hours, over a distance of almost three hundred kilometers. The ride takes you through arid, mountainous regions, called the ‘sertão’. On the way, the bus driver stopped at a number of places along the highway; the most important stopover was in the town of Curvelo, about halfway the ride. There the driver had to drive a tourist tour in order to reach the intercity bus station. The same route was taken again in the direction of the highway. Not far from Curvelo, along the highway, I noticed this red carpet. This runner covered the stairs to a higher church building. The churchgoers are here still regarded as very important people!

213. Big hand
DECEMBER 2009: Big hand
Visiting the interior of Minas Gerais – a huge state with an area equal to that of France and Switzerland together – is quite an adventure. Vast forests, endless mountain ranges, not to mention the vast savanna areas and plantations. Countless towns and villages, sometimes no larger than a single street, are randomly located throughout the enormous state. Minas Gerais counts no less than eight hundred and fifty municipalities. Late 2009, I was in Coronel Fabriciano, a city east of capital Belo Horizonte. This town already has more than one hundred thousand inhabitants. One morning, when I was having a ride in in the green, hilly surroundings, I noticed this huge hand. Not much later I noticed more such hands. All those sculptures stood next to a bus stop: the hands served as bus stop benches.

JUNE 2005: Bus stop
In Curitiba, I already wondered the presence of the bi-articulated buses, which follow special tracks along the avenues, and had their stops at bus stop tubes. Therefore, this public transport system has a worldwide reputation. Prior to the 2014 World Cup soccer in Brazil, various Brazilian cities will inaugurate rapid bus systems, following Curitiba’s example. The bus stops will be different, with differently designed buses. Foz do Iguaçu already had a rapid bus system with bus stop tubes and articulated buses, as I had seen in 2005.
