126. Capybaras
DECEMBER 2007: Capybaras
This couple was found at the margin of Pampulha Lake in Belo Horizonte. Two capybaras (‘water pigs’) watching over the large artificial lake. The capybara is the world’s largest rodent and may weigh more than 65 kilograms. They are commonly found in Brazil and the neighboring countries. At the Ecological Park, one may observe a large family of these social animals. They attract much attention of the visitors that try to approach as close as possible. The park guards regularly have to warn them not to step too close, in order not to disturb them too much. Capybaras (or: capivaras in Portuguese) are excellent swimmers: you sometimes may suddenly see their heads appear above the water surface. When on land, they appear to be somewhat lazy…
