368: Cathedral roof
The construction of t he imperial city of Petrópolis started in 1843, when Pedro II issued a decree for a settlement, and for the construction of a summer palace. It is considered as the second planned – after Recife by the Dutch – city in Brazil. Initially, the mother church was planned near the imperial palace, according to the urbanization plan by Major Júlio Frederico Koeler. However, the construction of a new church was reconsidered and only in 1884, the current building of the cathedral was started. The Neo-Gothic building, inspired upon the classical Gothic churches in northern France. In 1925, the cathedral was inaugurated, and only in 1969, the church tower was completed. In 1921, the remains of emperor Pedro II and his wife, Teresa Christina, were buried in the cathedral. in 1971, the remains of Princess Isabel and her husband Gaston d”Eu were transferred to the imperial mausoleum. It is allowed to climb the cathedral tower, from where this picture was taken, showing t he red-tiled cathedral roof.

341: Catedral Metropolitana
The current cathedral was built between 1932 and 1938 on the spot where stood Igreja de Santo Antônio do Tijuco, which was constructed around 1750. This church was built of wood and adobe. The richly decorated pillars and ornaments in this church were covered with gold leaf. Nevertheless, this church was demolished. The new cathedral is painted in the main colors blue and white according to the local tradition. Inside the church decorations and ornaments have been made in the baroque style, which is also found in other prominent churches in the historic towns of Minas Gerais. The authentic baroque style is associated with the famous artist of that time: Antonio Francisco Lisboa, better known as Aleijadinho.

318: Our Lady of Victory Cathedral
When I was in Guarapari – a popular beach resort in the state of Espírito Santo – in 2011, I also went to Vitória, the state capital, for one day. I wandered through the center, visited the Anchieta Palace, and enjoyed the magnificent views of the historical buildings. One of the principal historical buildings is the Catedral Metropolitana de Nossa Senhora da Vitória. It is located near the place where the original Matriz Church stood. That church was demolished in 1918, followed by the construction of the new church. Its construction was halted for many years, and only in 1933, the cathedral was inaugurated. The church is built in the Neogothic style, inspired upon the Dom Cathedral in Cologne.

OCTOBER 2008: Saint Francis
The giant conical structure of the São Sebastião Cathedral in downtown Rio is hard to miss. The 75 m tall and almost 100 m wide building is inspired upon the Mayan architectural style of pyramids. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, patron saint of Rio de Janeiro. Its construction was completed in 1979 and hosts several interesting highlights, such as the four huge stained glass windows that span from floor to ceiling. The windows designed in basic colors, represents the four pillars or Catholicism: Una (One, in green), Santa (Holy, in red), Católica (Catholic, in yellow), and Apostólica (Apostolic, in blue). Another feature is the bronze statue of Saint Francis, sculpted by Humberto Cozzo. In the photograph, the bronze statue is facing the mirror image of the São Sebastião Cathedral, reflected in a neighboring building.
