254: Children playing

João Pessoa – capital of Paraíba state – is an interesting coastal city in northeastern Brazil. The small center hosts several monuments that are worth a visit, but also the coastal area can not be forgotten. Beautiful beaches are located within the city limits, and in the immediate vicinity, and there is even a possibility to visit sand banks at low tide. These sand banks are reachable by boat, and it is impressive to see how the reclaimed piece of land is being occupied again by the surrounding water at high tide. The promenades along the beaches attract many people and also children. These two children enjoyed themselves imperturbably on one of the beach promenades.

JULY 2008: Children along the highway

It’s no secret that there is much poverty in the large northeastern region of Brazil. There have recently been intense attempts by the federal government to eradicate absolute poverty of the regional population, with visible results. Nonetheless, poverty is still clearly visible there, even to the eyes of tourists and travelers who use the highways. At some locations, houses and huts have been built not far from the highway, and the local people seem to be undisturbed about the speeding fast traffic. A few people try to take advantage of the raised bumps at the city limits, and then try to sell vegetables, fruit, sweets or handicraft to drivers and passengers. Children also seem to have grown up with life along the highway. These children enthusiastically waved to us when our bus passed by their little house.

DECEMBER 2006: Christmas presents

I spent Christmas 2006 with friends in Guarulhos. Guarulhos is a metropolis that is located next to the mega city of São Paulo, and is widely known for the international airport. The friends living in Guarulhos enjoy a comfortable life: a big house, well-paid jobs. Not far from their house, only a few kilometers away, big favelas (slums) are located. Generally, favelas have a bad name, and are associated with poverty, drug lords, drug traffickers, murderers, muggers. However, the vast majority of the favelistas is peaceful and has the daily struggles for a decent life. The children lack good food, clothes, shoes and toys. Hence, my friends had gathered some money for buying little presents for these children and young mothers. On Christmas Day, I was invited to join the friends. We put on a red Christmas hat, and climbed in the pick-up truck. The driver carefully parked the truck, with the rear in the direction of the favela. Soon the first kids appeared and made others run to the truck. They eagerly accepted the little bags with toys and candies. Some of them tried to beg for another bag. It was good to see the smiles appear on their sometimes dirty faces. Our Christmas thought. I chose to show this picture, since it clearly shows that not everyone in a favela is black…
