276: Clouds
In February 2010 I took a flight to Europe. From Belo Horizonte I had to take a domestic flight to São Paulo, where I could take the connecting flight to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, at around midnight. The flight to São Paulo takes only an hour, flying over the mountain scenery of the Minas Gerais and São Paulo states. From the small window there is a lot to see. The summer rains of the previous months were responsible for the fresh green landscape: the wooded mountains, the cultivated valleys, with small villages and towns spread around. Occasionally large cloud parties blocked the sight of this fascinating landscape. But equally interesting for me were these clouds, high in the sky.

DECEMBER 2006: Pão de Açúcar
On a summer Sunday, I was part of a group of students who climbed the partly paved, partly rugged trail from Urca Beach to the top of the Urca Mountain. From the top of the Urca Mountain we could enjoy a beautiful view over a large part of the city of Rio, the Guanabara Bay, and the adjacent Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar) Mountain. This impressive rock is one of the principal tourist attractions in Rio. The top of it can be reached by two cable car lines. The first line goes from Urca Beach to the top of the Urca Mountain, from where a second line continues to the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain. On this sunny day in December, large clouds were gradually stacked on top of each other, reaching higher and higher in the blue sky. Compared to the size of these huge cumulus clouds, the city of Rio at the horizon seemed to be very small …

DECEMBER 2006: Natural mirror
Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais state, is over four hundred kilometers away from the nearest beach, in Rio de Janeiro. But there is a large artificial lake just outside the city center. This lake, Lagoa da Pampulha, was created in the forties of the past century. Architect Oscar Niemeyer became world famous with his works along the margins of this lake. In winter, when virtually no rain falls roughly six months, there are few clouds to be seen in the deep blue sky. However, in the Brazilian spring, there are sometimes large cloud formations to see. The great diversity of shapes and types of clouds are ingredients for fascinating cloud formations, which are reflected in the still water in the lake. An interesting natural mirror of clouds.
