128. Rainbow Man
OCTOBER 2007: Rainbow Man
Our group of twenty students was hosted in a cozy hostel between Copacabana and Ipanema. We only had to walk about half a kilometer to reach either Copacabana Beach or Ipanema Beach. On the final day of our long weekend in Rio, we were surprised to see so many colorful people on the boulevard that parallels Copacabana Beach. Soon we discovered that the Rio Gay Parade (‘Orgulho Gay’) was about to start. It was a hot and sunny October Sunday. Many people enjoyed the beach and were visibly amazed by what they were seeing around. People with feather boas, bright colored shirts, skirts, shorts, and sunglasses. Some of them also used colorful wigs, like the man on this picture. We should call him Rainbow Man.

Copacabana Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world. And indeed, Copacabana is a beautiful beach. The 4 km beach strip is flanked by a large number of hotels at one side, and by calm waves at the other side. No wonder that many events happened there, and on the boulevard parallel to the beach. Who remembers the concert of the Rolling Stones, with more than two million people watching it? Or the famous fireworks, at the start of every year? Copacabana is also the site of the local Gay Parade, the so-called Orgulho Gay. The biggest parade is in São Paulo, with millions of spectators. But the Parade of Rio also attracts many people, including many tourists. When I was in Rio in October 2007, together with forty students, we were enjoying Copacabana Beach, when the Parade was about to start. We became very curious and we left the beach. Like many tourists, we walked along the Boulevard and watched the parade. It was a big party, everyone was enjoying it. Many tourists appeared to be amazed by what they were witnessing. It was a very colorful parade, and the man with the rainbow wig on his head is just one example.

Together with Copacabana Beach, Ipanema Beach is surely one of the most popular beaches in Rio de Janeiro. Ipanema Beach is flanked by Arpoador Beach (where is a small rock in the sea, where one may enjoy an interesting view of Ipanema Beach and its flanking beaches), and by Leblon Beach. The two hilltops are called Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers); behind them is the location of the famous Rocinha Favela. Further behind, the Barra da Tijuca District is located, with more beaches and the emerging Olympic Village.
