197. Cormorant 

FEBRUARY 2008: Cormorant

Pampulha Lake in Belo Horizonte attracts many day trippers and tourists who enjoy the natural beauty, the scenic beauty, or make a leisurely walk or bike ride. Especially on weekends many townspeople arrive at the lake for their leisure activities. And indeed, there is much to see and enjoy about this little piece of nature in the metropolis. Even though the lake suffers pollution because of wastewater and sewage, which are discharged into it, the lake is a favorite spot for many fish-eating birds. Likewise for the black cormorant, which reside at the lake in large numbers. It is not uncommon to see them hunting for fish, when they disappear completely under water for a few seconds. In the picture the feet of the cormorant seem to be missing, or might be fused with the twig protruding above the water.

136. Cormorant

OCTOBER 2007: Cormorant

In October 2007, we had a long weekend in Rio de Janeiro. This weekend included 12 October, the day of Brazil’s patron saint and therefore a national holiday. From Rio, we took the ferry boat to the other side of Guanabara Bay, to Niterói. The boat ride took about half an hour. There is a faster connection between the two cities, via a long bridge. However, during rush hours, the motorists may meet serious traffic jams on the bridge. Therefore, pedestrians, and people using public transport, prefer to make the boat ride. They can enjoy the magnificent views of the landscapes that surround the bay: skylines of the cities of Niterói and Rio de Janeiro, the mountains of Corcovado, Urca, and Pão de Açúcar. When leaving Rio de Janeiro, I noticed this water bird floating on the Guanabara Bay: a cormorant, with the Latin name Phalacrocorax brasilianus. The Brazilians call it Biguá. It floated almost invisibly among the tiny sunlit waves caused by the ferry boat.

033. Rest 

JULY 2005: Rest

Talking about fishing…. Black cormorants are quite common in Pampulha. Their preys are the fish that are found in the artificial lake. Even when the lake is heavily polluted, with even more waste material than algae, these birds continued to fish around. They manage to express their patience; they are much more patient than fishermen. After having caught their prey, they take a long rest, in order to digest their meal. Meanwhile, polish and clean their large wings, and appear to enjoy the warmth of the winter sun when they spread their wings.
