023: Cheese for sale
It might be a cliche, but the Dutch love cheese. They eat a lot of their favorite Gouda, Edam, Leiden, Maasdam cheese, for example. And many people all around the world love eating Dutch cheese. In Brazil, Dutch cheese is very expensive. You might pay about 50 euros for a kilo of old cheese. You can imagine that Brazilians in Amsterdam will be amazed to see big wheels of cheese on a simple stand in a street in downtown Amsterdam. Such big wheels of more than ten kilos must be worth a fortune, and they are left there unprotected, in open air! Until recently, it was quite hard to find Dutch cheese in Brazilian supermarkets. But now, they even may offer big discounts on small chunks of delicious of Maasdam or Gouda cheese! You can also find cheese of the Gouda type that is produced in Argentina or even in Brazil.

022: Accordion street musician
When I visited Amsterdam on a cold but sunny day in March, I walked in the historic center for some hours. And behaved like an average tourist: looking around, from left to right, from street level and upward. Only few objects could escape my eyes and my camera. I walked through the Dam Square, the Rokin, and entered the narrow streets behind the Damrak: the Red Light District. From there, I continued to Nieuwmarkt and Waterlooplein, and walked back through the Bloemenmarkt (flower market) and Rokin to the Dam Square. That day, my eyes caught many interesting objects and people in the streets. Objects that I’ve never observed before during my numerous previous walks in the city when I was a student there. And many people that drew my attention, like artists, musicians and ordinary people with peculiar means of transportation. Talking about musicians: this woman sat against a wall, not far from the Central Station, and tried to gain some money by playing the accordion.

278: Sandals for sale
It is a common view in many major Brazilian cities: street vendors behind market stalls and outstretched blankets with a modest assortment and amount of market goods. These so-called camelôs try to sell cheap electronic gadgets, vegetables, fruit, handicrafts, cheap clothes, and shoes to passers-by. There is no lack of them in the centers: at day, the streets are well stocked with potential buyers, attracted by the low prices. In the center of João Pessoa I found this merchandise: sandals, good for the warm summer weather. In various models and sizes.

241: Coffee bike
Maceió – capital of the northeastern state of Alagoas – has a cozy downtown, where’s a lot to see around. There are not only the numerous shops and boutiques with colorful names and shop windows. I also looked around, what was going on in the streets. There were countless stalls selling freshly picked fruit, nuts, packaged bread and pastries, snacks, beverages, homemade clothing and crafts, electronics, household stuff, and much more. These stalls sometimes filled more than half of the sidewalk, so the crowd was forced to push each other along them. Some – wider – roads were better to walk, but appeared almost deserted. And there I saw this coffee cycle, complete with several fresh coffee jugs and cups. They even thought of a waste basket on the handlebars.

222: Strange cloud
JANUARY 2009: Strange cloud
I was walking around in downtown Belo Horizonte on a sunny Saturday. I had just left Praça da Liberdade behind me. One week ago, in this square, Christmas decoration was still there, and attracted thousands of visitors each day. Many townspeople went out with their families to take dozens of snapshots for their digital family album on the Internet, especially in Orkut and Facebook. At weekends, I enjoyed much to make long walks through downtown Belo Horizonte, and most of the time I was to be found between the bus station and the Savassi neighborhood. There was always much to see, and I had my camera within reach. When I was walking in the direction of Savassi, something strange above me caught my eye. It was a long, luminous stripe. Most likely, it was a condensation cloud from an airplane, which must have flown shortly before. The strange color can be explained by the low sun in the late afternoon.

APRIL 2008: Puppy dogs
In Curitiba, capital of the state of Paraná, you can visit a large-scale open air fair in the center on Sundays. Hundreds of stalls offer a wide diversity of handicraft, utensils, local art, food and drinks. You can meet interesting souvenirs and hand-made decorations for reasonable prices. It is not uncommon to bargain about the price. That Sunday, I spent several hours there, wandering along the stalls, taking pictures, and paying closer looks at eye-catching objects. What also caught my eye, were these two Golden Retriever pups. They were kept in a large plastic box, and they were looking so cute, with a kind of humble expression that must have melted many hearts. When I took this picture, the dogs received attention of two different people who didn’t resist stroking their soft, light brown fur. I really hope that these pups have found a good home and have lived a good dog’s life.
