JULY 2007: Tree stump
This tree stump was found in the immense dune landscape of Lençóis Maranhenses, in the state of Maranhão. It is not common to find such a stump in the dunes, because the closest group of trees was some hundreds of meters away. The tree had died here, or something, someone had dragged it to this location? With time, the stump will erode further, by water and the sand storms. The photo appears to be a bit hazy, caused by plastic foil that covered my camera against tiny sand grains. Those grains might intrude the smallest holes of the camera and eventually cause irreparable damage. Covering the camera in plastic was an excellent solution, albeit sometimes awkward when the foil was not fully stretched with the opening of the lens. However, the haziness added some mystical effect to this picture.

JULY 2007: Loneliness of Lençóis Maranhenses
The immense dune landscape of Lençóis Maranhenses is located at about 250 km east of São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão. We stayed in the small city of Barreirinhas – located at the Preguiças River -, which is considered as the gateway to Lençóis. Early in the morning, we were picked up by a 4×4 vehicle, which had seats for six people. Firstly, the slow Preguiças River had to be crossed by a ferry. Then a secondary rood, with loose sand and with water puddles, was followed, until the meeting point. From there, we were free to walk around, until sunset. We all went to the nearest lake and settled us down near the lake, which contained clear blue water. The contrast with the white sand was amazing. Soon, I started to walk around and climbed some sand dunes. I didn`t have to go too far to feel literally alone, surrounded by a vast landscape of white sand dunes, with some green bushes and several crystal blue and emerald green freshwater lakes, with the cloudless blue sky above me. There was no sign of life around me: no men, no animals, and no birds in the sky. Just me, in the middle of the white dune desert. Later that day, one of the friends joined me during another walk in the dunes. She was walking ahead of me, and was having the same experience of loneliness in Lençóis…..

An immense national park of 155 thousand hectares. It is really impossible to visit everything within a single day. However, I only had the opportunity to visit Lençóis for one day. I did not waste my time, I did not join my travel companions who stayed at one of the numerous freshwater lakes. That day I have walked many hours through the dune landscape, in order to get some impression of the beauty and uniqueness of the park. I only can use superlatives to describe the park. You only need to walk and climb a few hundred meters through the dune landscape to get the feeling that you are really alone in this world. I sat there, on top of one of the dunes. I was there alone, without company. Without animals around me, no plants, no sounds. Only the white sand, the blue sky with some white clouds, and a burning sun. For a while, I was feeling very small, like an ant in a desert. No powerful man rules that world, but at that moment Mother Nature rules you… The original picture was taken in July 2007.
