070. Fortress
JULY 2006: Fortress
One of the most memorable trips during our stay in Salvador, was the boat ride to the island of Itaparica. The journey lasted forty-five minutes over somewhat troubled water. The sometimes violent waves ignited some uncomfortable movements in the stomachs of some of our friends. They were clearly delighted when they were able to touch firm ground again. During our boat ride, we came along a remarkable fortress, which was located on a tiny island. It was the fortress of São Marcelo, which was built in 1624, as part of a defense strategy against Dutch invasions. The Dutch indeed managed to control part of the Brazilian colony. Mauríco de Nasssau had been ruling for twenty-five years, from Dutch Brazil’s capital, Recife. The picture above was not taken during the boat ride, but near the urban elevator – Elevador Lacerda -, through a hole in a wall that surrounded an urban park.

Itamaracá Island is located at about 40 km from Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco. A regular bus from Recife stops near the entrance of the island. From there, one may take a taxi to the beach of Forte Orange. When I went to this beach, I was accompanying a group of 15 students. We stopped 2 taxis to bring us to the beach. Eight people in each taxi, I had to carry two lightweight students on my lap. It was a warm and sunny day, ingredients for an unforgettable day on the beach. The beach is flanked by a historic fortress, built by the Dutch in 1631, and rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1654, the year in which the Dutch were forced to leave Brazil. A sailing ship was anchored near the beach. It was at the end of the afternoon. A young couple stood there at the beach. Their body language could be interpreted as something starting, maybe some romance?

Ilha Santa Catarina is located in Southern Brazil, and is part of the state of Santa Catarina (SC). The city of Florianópolis, capital of Santa Catarina, is located on the island, and is one of the three Brazilian capitals that is located on an island. The other two are Vitória (ES) and São Luís (MA). The island measures 424 square kilometers; about 54 km long and 18 km wide. Florianópolis boasts to have 42 beaches within the borders, i.e. on the island. Jurerê Internacional in the north is one of the most popular. This beach is flanked by a Fortress, Fortaleza São José da Ponta Grossa. Praia do Forte is located next to this fortress. From this beach, the mainland can be seen. Beautiful sunsets may be witnessed from Praia do Forte. These photographs were taken at the end of April 2007, Brazilian autumn. Ilba Santa Catarina is also named Ilha da Magia, the Island of Magic…

Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, and former capital of Brazil, is very popular among (foreign) tourists. One of the landmarks of Salvador is undoubtedly the light tower in the Barra District. This light tower, which is located inside Fortress Santo Antônio da Barra, is considered to be the oldest in Brazil. The fortress was constructed around 1596. When the Dutch invaded Salvador in 1624, they encountered no resistance from the troops at the fortress, but one year later the Dutch had to leave Salvador. Following a shipwreck in 1668, the fortress was rebuilt in 1696. The first light tower of Brazil started to work in 1698, on the base of oil that was extracted from whales. The actual structure of 22 meters high was built in 1839, the light was visible that 18 nautical miles at clear weather conditions. Only recently, the tower and the museum are again accessible for visitors. From the tower, they may enjoy a 360 degrees view of the city of Salvador, the shoreline and the Atlantic Ocean.
