322: Guaycuru warrior statue
Campo Grande, capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, has an interesting park within the municipal boundaries: Parque das Nações Indígenas, park of the indigenous tribes. One of the most striking elements in this park is a seven meter high statue of an indigenous rider on a prancing horse. This Guaycuru tribe warrior has a spear in hand. He is not on the horse, but strangely he hangs on one horse flank. The Guayacuru warriors were active in a large part of central South America, and were known as very aggressive and barbaric. They lived in hunting and fighting. The Guaycuru offered a brave resistance against the Portuguese. The original tribe became eventually extinct, but related tribes are now also considered as Guaycuru.
