382: Bromeliad

During my stay in Belo Horizonte, I must have visited the Botanical Garden more than ten times. This botanical garden is part of the local ZOO, and is located at the margin of Lake Pampulha. Although this garden is not as big as its counterpart in Rio de Janeiro, the garden hosts an interesting collection of a broad variety of plants and flowers. During each visit, I took dozens of photographs of the plants and flowers in various shapes and hues. When I visited the greenhouses, orchids and bromeliads attracted my attention. There are over 3400 bromeliad species, and the most familiar specie is the delicious pineapple. They are able to store water at their leaf bases. Bromeliads are mainly found in the American tropics and may host bright colorful flowers, like the red flower in this photograph.

Imaging Brazil 288: Dragonfly on a Leaf in Belo Horizonte, MG (2010)

288: Dragonfly

Dragonflies are common in Brazil. I have often found them along the waterfront of a natural pond  where they exert their graceful dancing along the shore and across the water surface. However, I photographed this dragonfly in the Botanical Garden in Belo Horizonte. At small pond, which contained a variety of water plants,  I counted a handful of different types of dragonflies. Dragonflies in different colors and sizes. The warm sun shone almost perpendicular to this slender dragonfly,  leaving a sharp shadow on a lush green leaf .

268: Reflection of clouds

The Botanical Garden in Belo Horizonte forms a complex with the Zoo, at the edge of Lake Pampulha. The garden is divided into several thematic gardens, including a collection of cactuses, succulents, plants that grow in the local savannas, desert plants, and an interesting collection of plants from the tropical Atlantic and Amazon rain forests. There are also some ponds with aquatic plants, where you can find many dragonflies. On this semi-cloudy day, I noticed the reflection of clouds on the water surface, good for an interesting composition.

179. Imperial palm trees 

MARCH 2008: Imperial palm trees

The famous Jardim Botânico (Botanical Garden) in Rio de Janeiro hosts more than six thousand – mostly tropical – plant species. One of the tallest and impressive species is the imperial palm tree. More than four hundred palm trees are planted in two straight rows that flank some principal paths in the Botanical Garden. It is believed that het Portuguese Prince Dom João VI himself had planted the ‘mother palm tree’ in 1809. The actual imperial palm trees are descendants of this so-called Palma Mater, which, incidentally, has succumbed to a lightning strike in 1972. Thirty years after the plantation, the Palma Mater started to flower and carry fruits. The then director of the Botanical Garden commanded to collect all flowers and fruits, in order to trying to maintain exclusivity of the imperial palm tree in the Garden. However, his policy wasn’t successful, and thus more imperial palm trees are found outside the Garden. Nonetheless, the imperial palm trees are very famous, and are now shown in the Jardim Botânico logo.

MARCH 2008: Big leaf

One of my favorite locations in Rio is the Botanical Garden. This city garden, located between Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and Tijuca Forest , houses a vast collection of tropical flowers, plants, herbs, shrubs, and trees. Typical for this botanical garden are the  imperial palms in a long, double row that were originally planted along the way from the garden to the Guanabara Bay. Today, only the palm trees in the garden,  and along an avenue in Botafogo still remain. From the botanical garden, the Corcovado Peak – with the statue of Christ the Redeemer on top – is clearly visible. From the neighboring Lages Park, a trail can be followed, to the Corcovado Peak. The botanical garden is a perfect site for taking amazing pictures. Not only of entire trees and plants, but also close ups. Like I took this photo of a leaf from a Philodendron species. The recently raked reddish brown earth under this leaf reminds me of a big nut.

In March 2007, I made various day trips to the urban parks in Belo Horizonte: Parque Municipal, Parque Mangabeiras, Parque Ecológico, and Jardim Zoológico/Botânico. My principal intention was to test the capabilities and impossibilities of my new compact camera. One day, I went to Jardim Botânico, the botanical garden that is located inside the ZOO, and situated at the margin of Pampulha Lake. I was there to photograph plants and flowers that were exhibited in thematic groups. Locally common flowers and plants, and plants from various Brazilian and foreign regions. I was also testing the possibilities of the zoom lens. I tried to focus on the stamens of a purple flower. It was not easy to have this part in clear focus, because the plant was moving on the rhythm of a light winter breeze. The final result demonstrated the harmonizing color combination of purple and yellow.

MARCH 2007: Purple flowers

In March 2007, I had to replace my Sony camera for a Canon. The old camera, good for more than thirty thousand photographs and several thousands of kilometers of travel, got a serious problem with the lenses and the shutter. I went to several locations in Belo Horizonte for testing my new camera: the ZOO, Botanical Garden, Mangabeiras Park, the Ecological Park, and the Municipal Park. I took hundreds of photos of plants, flowers, animals, and landscapes. The results were very satisfying! One day, I was in the Botanical Garden, which is part of the ZOO in Pampulha District. I had the luck that many plants were flowering. Like the purple flowers on the photograph above; I had to aim in the air, the result seemed to be overexposed. With some slight digital modifications, without modifying the composition, I had managed to retrieve a clear and colorful picture.

COLORFUL BRAZIL: Jardim Botânico, Curitiba (PR)

The Botanical Garden in Curitiba is an ideal location to free your mind, to enjoy some relaxing moments. The Garden is easily reached by bus from downtown or from the railway station. It is an open garden, free of charge. Principal attraction is the greenhouse, a copy of the London Chrystal Palace.  I found this colorful flower inside this greenhouse, on a rainy day. While giant raindrops were falling on the glass, people sheltering for the rain admired the colorful beauty of tropical plants and flowers.

COLORFUL BRAZIL: Japanese Bridge at Botanical Garden, Rio de Janeiro (RJ)

Japanese Bridge at Botanical Garden, RIO DE JANEIRO (RJ)

Not far from Ipanema Beach, along the Lake of Rodrigo Freitas, is the Jardim Botânico, the Botanical Garden. A must-see in Rio. The garden has the size of 137 hectares, of which 54 hectares is cultivated. More than tree thousand cataloged plant species are located there.
The garden was created by the Portuguese king Dom João VI, not long after his arrival in Brazil in 1808. He and his family had to leave Portugal when Napoleon was about to invade his country. Brazil was transformed from a colony to one of the kingdoms of the Portuguese empire. At the time of the creation, the garden was called ‘Horto Real’, the Royal Garden.
Striking and impressive are the two columns of majestic imperial palm trees, that have become the symbol of the garden. The Botanical Garden is widely known for the collections of orchids, bromelias, cacti, roses. One of the most visited locations is the Japanese Garden, created in 1935. In 1995, the garden was renovated and inaugurated by a daughter of the Japanese emperor. The garden contains cherry trees, bonsai trees, bamboo, and a pond with koi fish.
