291: Mirror lake reflection
Pernambuco is a state in northeastern Brazil and is slightly larger than Portugal. As far as the population is concerned, the Brazilian state does not do much for Portugal. Pernambuco has a rich history and enormous cultural wealth. The Dutch ruled their colony from Pernambuco for a quarter of a century, after which the Portuguese settlers ruled Pernambuco again. The state also has a natural wealth, with savannahs, and some remains of the vast Atlantic jungle forest. When I was on my way to the neighboring state of Paraíba, we drove along this large lake. The still water seemed like a natural mirror, which showed a heavily cloudy sky.

255: Sunset
A colorful sunset always appeals to the imagination, anywhere in the world. Sunsets from the attic window, from the balcony, from a hilltop, on the beach, or, as in Belo Horizonte, along the margin of Lake Pampulha. Belo Horizonte is built on countless hills and slopes, and therefore only few flat spots are to be found within the city limits. Lake Pampulha is one of such locations. Therefore, the road along the lake is very popular among cyclists who don’t have to climb challenging slopes here. The path along the bank is also suitable for inline skates. Hikers like me would rather prefer to pause an instant, in order to watch the fascinating color show during a sunset. The vivid red and orange hues in the sky are here reflected in the water.

243: Lake mirror
Lake Pampulha in Belo Horizonte is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the capital of Minas Gerais. The lake, constructed in the forties of the last century, measures a perimeter of more than eighteen kilometers, inviting for a brisk walk. Once a year, the ‘Volta da Pampulha` is held: a running event for enthusiasts, amateurs, and professional athletes. A number of buildings, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, are found along the banks of the irregularly shaped lake. Once and a while, the stagnant water causes a nuisance because of the supply of contaminated water and silting. The city has to establish various cleaning operations to get the lake cleaner again.

JULY 2005: Coots
The artificial lake of Pampulha, built in the forties of the last century, is one of the major tourist attractions in Belo Horizonte. Within a stone’s throw are the Mineirão football stadium and the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Several elements of the so-called Architectonic Complex of Pampulha are located at the margins of the lake. This complex, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, includes a church, a tennis center, a ballroom, and a casino that was later converted into a museum for contemporary arts. You’ll also find the zoo and the botanical garden, but to see the animals living in freedom, you only need to walk along the eighteen kilometer long margin of the lake. You may then observe many water birds: herons, cormorants, and coots, as shown in the picture.
