249: Coconut handicraft
The famous Praia do Francês is located at about thirty kilometers south of Maceio. It is easily accessible by bus or by a van. The wide beach and the calm and shallow sea water are perfect for the entire family to spend a wonderful day on the beach. Dozens of beach pavilions offer a wide range of meals, snacks and drinks, albeit at high prices. If you walk just a few hundred meters behind the pavilions, you can encounter little restaurants serving simple but tasty meals for a reasonable price. At such popular beach, you inevitably meet many vendors trying to sell their merchandise. Like this friendly vendor, who proudly shows one of his creations, made from a coconut.

242: Dragging a jangada
You may see them regularly along the beaches in northeastern Brazil: flat-bottomed boats, the so-called jangadas. These – sometimes colorful – little sailing boats are ideal for sailing around on shallow coastal waters. The jangadas are mainly used for fishing, freight and passenger transport. Especially locations along the coast and along the rivers, which are difficult to reach by road, rely on jangadas. At tourist locations, the boats are used to transport tourists to more distant sandbanks, where passengers can enjoy their stay on the reclaimed beach – at low tide -, with a beautiful view of the coral reefs, the ocean and coastline. After a day of service, the jangada is dragged on the beach.

241: Coffee bike
Maceió – capital of the northeastern state of Alagoas – has a cozy downtown, where’s a lot to see around. There are not only the numerous shops and boutiques with colorful names and shop windows. I also looked around, what was going on in the streets. There were countless stalls selling freshly picked fruit, nuts, packaged bread and pastries, snacks, beverages, homemade clothing and crafts, electronics, household stuff, and much more. These stalls sometimes filled more than half of the sidewalk, so the crowd was forced to push each other along them. Some – wider – roads were better to walk, but appeared almost deserted. And there I saw this coffee cycle, complete with several fresh coffee jugs and cups. They even thought of a waste basket on the handlebars.

240: Only ring once
The town of Marechal Deodoro, located south of the city of Maceió, has a great history. It was once the capital of the – then province – Alagoas, and is the birthplace of the first president of Brazil. During my visit to the town it looked very quiet, sometimes even a little abandoned. On this sunny day with a comfortable temperature, it was a delight to stroll around. Marechal Deodoro has a number of monuments and sites where the President has left its historical traces. But there were also other interesting things to see, like this comment beside a doorbell, “Only ring once!”

AUGUST 2009: Water reflection
During my stay in Maceió in August 2009, I didn’t restrict myself to the city limits, but I also made some trips by bus. Two of these trips were provided by the tour company, while I was on my own in the other trips. It was not really difficult, I only had to request some information at the hotel and at the bus station for the necessary bus schedules and bus stops. I took the bus to various beaches at some distance from the capital, like Ipioca and Sonho Verde. During the bus ride, I kept the camera on my lap, and I shot several pictures of the varied landscape. A hilly, green landscape with coconut plantations, sugarcane plantations, and grasslands; often the landscape was intersected by rivers or streams, like here on the photo. On this semi-cloudy day, the clouds were sharply reflected in the almost stagnant river water.

AUGUST 2009: Rooster drinking water
Marechal Deodoro, former capital of the state of Alagoas, is located south of the actual capital, Maceió. The town is easily accessible by bus, and there are also vans available that commute between the two cities for almost the same price. The town hosts a number of interesting historical buildings, and is best known as the place of birth of the first president of Brazil, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca. Nevertheless, we noticed few tourists in the town, and it surprised us when we learned upon inquiry that there was no restaurant to find. We were forced to eat our lunch upon return in Maceió. Before we returned, we had quite a bit of walking around in the town, where we encountered this rooster drinking water.

224: Red car
AUGUST 2009: Red car
Maceió, capital of the small state of Alagoas, is an interesting tourist destination. Not only because of the beautiful beaches within and just outside the city limits, but also because of the local history, culture, and gastronomy. In 2009, I spent a week in a hotel in Ponta Verde, on the coast. You can find a considerable number of hotels in Ponta Verde, while you can find delicious food and drinks in the neighboring Pajuçara. From Pajuçara, you can visit, at low tide, shoals with flat-bottomed sailing boats, the so-called jangadas. Between the beach on the mainland and the shoals, the sea level is then so low that natural pools (piscinas naturais) are formed. They disappear at high tide. In the picture you can see a reflection of Pajuçara Beach with a single palm tree and – black – sail of a jangada.

Marechal Deodoro – not far from the popular beach of Praia do Francês – is a small town located about thirty kilometers south of Maceió, capital of the small state of Alagoas. In 1611, the town was founded with the name Vila Madalena the Sabaúma. Little more than two hundred years later, in 1817, it became capital of the Alagoas province under the name of Alagoas da Lagoa do Sul, until 1839, when Maceió became the new capital. In 1939, the town was named after the first president of Brazil, who was born there. Marechal Deodoro is home to some historic buildings and churches and has a simple street life, which you often find in smaller towns in Brazil. When I was in Marechal Deodoro, I encountered this man who carried dozens of plastic chairs in a creative way on a small handcart.

A bus trip from Belo Horizonte to the northeast of the country is very tiring but very exciting. For someone like me who loves photography and landscapes, it is an ideal way of traveling and exploring the immense country. It appears as if the landscapes change with every kilometer; it is difficult to switch off the camera and wait for another landscape. It is well known that there is much poverty in northeastern Brazil, which quite visible. When we were traveling to Maragogi, a famous beach resort at some distance from Maceió (state of Alagoas), my eye fell on this little shacks on the outskirts of sugarcane fields. I was told that this type of huts was used by cane cutters as a kind of temporary living and a shelter against heavy rain. But at the sight of a child in front of such a cabin, it seems to me more likely that this child has this cabin as a permanent residence.

214. Cyclist on the beach
AUGUST 2009: Cyclist on the beach
Brazil hosts many beautiful beaches, which truly may be called beach paradises. One of these paradises is Maragogi Beach, located in the small state of Alagoas, between the cities of Maceió and Recife, capital of Pernambuco state. Maragogi is best known for the tidal sandbanks and reefs, which can be admired by snorkeling. At that time, I didn’t participate in a tour to the reefs and shoals, but I remained on the beautiful, wide beach instead. I started a long beach walk, which carried out southward to the mouth of a river which flowed into the Atlantic. Then I walked back towards the north, and I continued the walk for at least ninety minutes more. From time to time, I gave my legs some rest, while sitting down on the fine sands, and enjoying the beautiful views. Suddenly, my eye fell on a cyclist. It was both strange and very funny to observe someone trying to stay on his bike while wheeling on the loose sand.

204. Cotton candy
AUGUST 2009: Cotton candy
You see them often on the Brazilian beaches: hawkers. With a wide array of merchandise. They tirelessly scour the beaches looking for buying-eager beachgoers. Sometimes it can be quite annoying when you are trying to relax on the beach, a beach hawker loudly proclaims his merchandise. Besides, their shuffling over the loose sand is not always appreciated. On the other hand, such a beach hawker may be very useful in case you’ve forgotten something, like sunburn cream. Or when you are in desire of some snack or drink, such as a cocktail, a can of chilled beer, or a shrimp skewer. Or, as the picture shows: cotton candy. This beach hawker was active on the Praia do Francês – not far from the city of Maceió – in the state of Alagoas.

199. Cocktail seller
JULY 2008: Cocktail seller
You can enter any Brazilian beach and you certainly will meet them: ambulant hawkers. These vendors evoke mixed feelings among the beachgoers, but they are usually respected and even appreciated. A small minority among the beachgoers consider them as intrusive and annoying, especially when they loudly shouting offer their wares as they shuffle through the loose sand. But in general, the vendors are appreciated, mainly because of the convenience: the beachgoers need not to leave their chairs or towels for a snack, a cheap souvenir object or a tube of sunscreen. Especially sellers of simple snacks and (alcoholic) drinks do good business. But it is certainly not an easy life, as seen in the photo. This vendor of tropical cocktails waits patiently for his clients, while he is using a homemade crutch to support his healthy leg. Hats off to this man ….

195. Pier
JULY 2008: Pier
In January, when I traveled from Belo Horizonte to Fortaleza by bus (via Porto de Galinhas, Pipa and Canoa Quebrada), the bus ride along the coastline of Maceio, capital of the state of Alagoas. We were then almost at our destination that day, Porto de Galinhas. When we drove along the coastline, my observing eyes had already caught the long pier. Six months later, when Maceió was our final destination, the bus came again along the pier. This time it took less than an hour, before the bus arrived on our destination, the university campus. That morning the Atlantic Ocean looked pretty calm and the beach was very quiet. A lone jogger made his morning run.
