354: Palm tree reflection
When I lived in Belo Horizonte, I often spent my Sundays in the center of the enormous city. On pleasant, sunny days I walked through the Avenida Afonso Pena, all the way to the end at Praça da Bandeira: a distance of about six kilometers. There I continued my walking tour via a climbing street to the entrance of city park Mangabeiras. After this effort – some friends told me that I was nuts to walk this long distance – I often went to the stand where refreshing açai was sold. After having consumed this delicious energy bomb, I started my exploration through the park. With my camera in hand I searched for interesting compositions, as I saw this water reflection of small palm trees in a pond.

273: Palm tree reflection
In the popular Mangabeiras Park in Belo Horizonte you can find countless interesting compositions. Natural compositions of plants, leaves, insects, birds in their native habitat. Green mountain slopes in the south against clear blue skies, or skies filled with a rich variety of cloud shapes; in the north the vast skyline of Belo Horizonte. Also attracts less advanced compositions, including water reflections, attracts my attention. The reflection of this palm tree in the pond water became one of my favorite photographs of that year.

267: Indigenous man
I regularly visited Mangabeiras Park in Belo Horizonte. The park, just over six kilometers from the center, is located on the local Serra do Curral mountain range; it was a mine quarry some decades before. On the other side of the ridge a deep artificial lake can be seen. Today, the park attracts, especially on weekends and holidays, large numbers of visitors, also from the town itself. Complete families come to picnic, enjoy fresh popcorn, eat boiled corn, drink cool coconut water, or have some fresh açai. On Sundays, special events are sometimes organized, including performances by local pop bands, dance demonstrations or, as on the day of the photo, open-air masses. The mass was attended by several dozen, including a group of men and women from a local tribe, dressed in traditional costume.

209. Cycling toddler
FEBRUARY 2009: Cycling toddler
Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais, is built in a hilly landscape. Virtually every street or avenue in the metropolis has one or more slopes. Therefore, you need supportive footwear for daily walks. The south of the city is built on the slopes of Serra do Curral, a small mountain range with peaks up to 1700 meters. The road from downtown to Mangabeiras Park, six kilometers away, is one big slope. A large square is located just in front of the park: Praça do Papa, from which you may enjoy a magnificent view of the city center. The square is an ideal location for various forms of leisure and entertainment. You’ll find skaters, slack line acrobats, kite runners, and cyclists. My camera located this toddler who rode his rounds on his bike with training wheels.

124. Spider
JUNE 2007: Spider
It is not easy to find a large spider posing for you. Therefore, I was very lucky to picture this spider in Parque Mangabeiras, the largest municipal park in Belo Horizonte. The cobblestone trails are flanked by natural walls of earth, grown by small plants and held together by numerous roots. At a closer look, one may observe various little holes in the earthen wall; some of them are covered by a dense grayish white web. There I found this large spider. It was not located in the center of a web, but it was standing on front of a hole waiting for its preys. Since it was positioned in front of a dark hole, I had to use the flash. As a result the dark eyes turned into green, like a special type of an alien.

116. Spiderweb
JUNE 2007: Spiderweb
This colorful image represents a detail of a simple spiderweb that I have found in Parque Mangabeiras in Belo Horizonte during the final days of a Brazilian autumn. During this season, you might encounter many spiderwebs, produced by small and larger spiders. Some spiderwebs are quite small, but many are really large! It is not easy to take a picture of such a spiderweb: any slight movement in the air makes the web vibrate a little. This is also seen on the photo. There are no sharp, straight lines, but to my giant surprise, there was a color pattern, as if it were a result of a certain laboratory analysis, such as a protein analysis. The threads are not white or grayish white, but they bear many colors! From purple to red to yellow to pink, with some obviously illuminating rings. What are the secrets of the composition of these spider threads?

SEPTEMBER 2006: Curious monkey
Normally we don’t meet monkeys in European cities, they are also absent in urban parks. In Brazil, little monkeys are quite common in the major urban parks. In Belo Horizonte, for instance, they are found in Parque Municipal and in Parque Mangabeiras. These monkeys are called micos, the complete Portuguese term is mico-estrela. The scientific name is Callithrix penicillata, black tufted marmoset in English. These monkeys live in small groups in trees and climb from tree to tree in search for food. Brazilians love to watch these little creatures, who gratefully accept bananas and other fruits. The monkey in the photograph was not very shy; it was very curious. Nevertheless it kept watching my camera with a suspicious look.

FEBRUARY 2006: View on Belo Horizonte
The mountainous area around the city of Belo Horizonte offers plenty of stunning views of the huge city, which extends until the base of the mountain peaks. The average altitude of Belo Horizonte is about nine hundred meters above sea level, with some significant differences within the city limits. For some very steep hills, you need to have strong legs to reach the top of those hills. One of the best views is offered in the urban park of Mangabeiras . This park is located in the south, at the base of Serra de Corral, at an altitude of more than one thousand meters. Viewpoints in the park offer you much opportunity to witness breathtaking, colorful sunsets. Or to observe captivating colors when dark clouds gather for yet another water ballet in the city , while you still are allowed to enjoy abundant sunshine – at least for a while. This photo had appeared briefly as an illustration in Wikipedia, with the subject “Belo Horizonte”.

The largest municipal park of Belo Horizonte, Parque Mangabeiras, is located in the southern region of Belo Horizonte, at the slopes of Serra do Curral. A splendid view of the city may be observed from the Mirante, the vista point. Many tourists arrive daily at this mirante to take pictures from this point. For this reason, pine trees (in the center of the picture) were cut, to allow tourists to take their pictures.

Since December 2004, I live in Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais.
Founded at the end of the 19th century, the planned city was about to host several tens of thousands of people.
At present more than two million people live in Belo Horizonte.
Mangabeiras Park is located in the south, to the Serra do Curral. From there, one may enjoy a breathtaking view of the city of Belo Horizonte, and enjoy colorful views of the sunset.
