APRIL 2007: Miramar Monument
From Belo Horizonte, the bus travel takes about one full day to reach Florianópolis, capital of the state of Santa Catarina. The city, popularly known as Floripa, is located on an island, just outside the Brazilian mainland. The bus had to pass a checkpoint of the Highway Patrol, before it was allowed to enter the bridge to the island. To me, the relatively small city looked different from the other Brazilian capitals that I have visited before: a city without slums, a clean city, an apparently rich city. A city with wide avenues. A city that provides you a feeling of safety, I was feeling much safer in Floripa than I was used to in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador or Belo Horizonte. However, the city is not very popular for Brazilians to have their residence. In winter, it can become quite cold. During our stay in April 2007, we were lucky to experience a higher temperature; it even reached thirty degrees! During our visit to the city center, we encountered this composition of columns, as it if were a Greek or Roman monument. However, it was a Brazilian monument, as a remembrance of the reclamation of the former quay. Supported by a bright autumn sun and clear shadows, thus monument supports the idea that you are not in Brazil, but in some Mediterranean country….
