371: Shopping mall window reflection
There are several interesting shopping malls in Rio de Janeiro. Many Brazilians love to spend part of their leisure time in those shopping malls; not only for shopping and wandering along the shop windows, but also for their lunch and social drinks. The shopping malls in Rio are large: each with hundreds of stores and dozens of restaurants, and many of them host a cinema with several big rooms. The largest Mall of South America is Barra Shopping, with more than seven hundred stores. Other major malls are Norte Shopping, Shopping Nova América, Shopping Rio Sul, Praia Shopping, and Shopping Tijuca. The glass window in the photograph is Shopping Rio Sul, which is located in the neighborhood of Botafogo, near Urca. This shopping, built in 1980, hosts more than four hundred stores and welcomes more than twenty million people annually.

305: Bus mirror
Between 2006 and 2011, I made a number of long bus trips with various groups of university students. These students attended annual meetings, spread across the immense country. Especially the coastal cities in the northeast were very popular for these meetings. The students attended workshops, presentations and discussions, and in the evening they participated in various parties and music programs. I didn’t have to attend these meetings, but I gratefully took advantage of their invitation to get to know the country better. My final bus trip with these students was in November 2011: a meeting in Campo Grande, capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, near the border with Bolivia. A journey that lasted over seventeen hours. The picture shows a side mirror of our bus.

291: Mirror lake reflection
Pernambuco is a state in northeastern Brazil and is slightly larger than Portugal. As far as the population is concerned, the Brazilian state does not do much for Portugal. Pernambuco has a rich history and enormous cultural wealth. The Dutch ruled their colony from Pernambuco for a quarter of a century, after which the Portuguese settlers ruled Pernambuco again. The state also has a natural wealth, with savannahs, and some remains of the vast Atlantic jungle forest. When I was on my way to the neighboring state of Paraíba, we drove along this large lake. The still water seemed like a natural mirror, which showed a heavily cloudy sky.

280: Palm tree reflection
In April 2010, I was invited to attend a family party in a country house in Pitangui, at 125 km from Belo Horizonte. A chartered bus took us to the party venue where lunch was waiting for us: the traditional feijoada, the Brazilian bean stew. In the afternoon, many guests entertained themselves in the pool, while I was accompanying a group to the village of Pitangui. The evening was filled with music and dance. The night was pretty cold; in the morning there was even ripening on grass leaves. The sun was already exuberant, the air warmed up quickly . The stationary pond water was an ideal mirror for the sunbathing palm trees.

243: Lake mirror
Lake Pampulha in Belo Horizonte is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the capital of Minas Gerais. The lake, constructed in the forties of the last century, measures a perimeter of more than eighteen kilometers, inviting for a brisk walk. Once a year, the ‘Volta da Pampulha` is held: a running event for enthusiasts, amateurs, and professional athletes. A number of buildings, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, are found along the banks of the irregularly shaped lake. Once and a while, the stagnant water causes a nuisance because of the supply of contaminated water and silting. The city has to establish various cleaning operations to get the lake cleaner again.

183. Highway mirror
JULY 2008: Highway mirror
In July 2008, I undertook an adventurous bus trip to Maceio, capital of the state of Alagoas. A bus trip that took more than thirty-six hours. From Belo Horizonte, it took about twelve hours to reach the border of Minas Gerais with Bahia. And it took another twelve hours to reach the city limits of Bahia’s capital, Salvador. As we left in the night, we were sleeping during the journey through Minas Gerais. The following day, the bus drove along the diverse but somewhat barren landscape of Bahia. The highway was anything but straight, but had countless turns that followed the slopes of the hills and mountains. As I sat right behind a large bus window, I could conveniently use the mirror effect of that window. After some experimenting and playing with the camera, I managed to photograph some nice reflections of the highway. One of them showed the effect that we were apparently approaching a T-junction.

MAY 2008: Church water mirror
The tiny blue St. Francis Church at Lake Pampulha in Belo Horizonte is one of the favorite spots for tourists and photographers. The church, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, no longer serves as the location for regular masses, but merely as a small museum with religious art pieces of famous Brazilian artists. The curved shape of the church roof, the tiled wall telling the story of Saint Francis, and the separate tower provide a lot of inspiration for photographers. In my case, I was lucky to be there on a cloudless day with almost no wind. At the time of the picture, I stood at the other side of the lake, and zoomed in on the mirror image of the church, which was reflected in the water.

DECEMBER 2006: Natural mirror
Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais state, is over four hundred kilometers away from the nearest beach, in Rio de Janeiro. But there is a large artificial lake just outside the city center. This lake, Lagoa da Pampulha, was created in the forties of the past century. Architect Oscar Niemeyer became world famous with his works along the margins of this lake. In winter, when virtually no rain falls roughly six months, there are few clouds to be seen in the deep blue sky. However, in the Brazilian spring, there are sometimes large cloud formations to see. The great diversity of shapes and types of clouds are ingredients for fascinating cloud formations, which are reflected in the still water in the lake. An interesting natural mirror of clouds.

The museum is located at the principal square in Ouro Preto, Praça Tiradentes, named after the Brazilian hero, who headed the revolt against the Portuguese rulers in 1789. The revolt became unsuccessful, Tiradentes was condemned to death. He was hanged and dismembered on April 21, 1792, now a Brazilian national holiday. Despite being unsuccessful, the revolt or conspiracy, inspired by the American and French revolutions, was the start of the Brazilian independence process. The country became independent on September 7, 1822.
The museum in Ouro Preto, which was the town hall at that time, hosts a memorial for the members of the conspiracy.
The photograph is taken from as a mirror image that was displayed on a brand new black car (brand unknown).
The original picture was taken in June 2009

This beautiful smile belongs to one of my dearest and most beautiful friends in Brazil. I met her for the first time in 2005, and I accompanied her family to visit a common friend of us in Vitória, the capital of the state of Espírito Santo.
We have spent Reveillon there: the celebration of New Year, on the beach of Camburi, amidst thousands of people, mostly in white, cheering, laughing, singing. A happy giant family together, all with their hopes for the coming year.
We also spent some time on the beach, enjoying the sun, the warmth, the sea, our drinks. Those were unforgettable days and provided me some inspiration to take photographs. Like this photograph, when my friend was having a routine check of her beautiful face. I could not resist to immortalize this special moment, when her magic smile was covering her mirror.
