366: Bust and staircase

Without doubt, the Municipal Theater in downtown Rio de Janeiro may be considered as one of  the most beautiful monuments in this marvellous city. It is located at Rio Branco Avenue, Treze de Maio Avenue, Evaristo de Veiga Street, and Alagoas/ Marechal Floriano Square in Cinelândia District. The theater, inaugurated in 1909, belongs to the most important and most beautiful in Brazil. After the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889, playwright Artur Azevedo started a campaign for a new theater. It was major Pereira Passos who took the initiative for the construction, and his son, architect Francisco de Oliveira Passos, designed the theater inspired upon the Ópera in Paris. More than one thousand wooden poles were used as foundation for the theater. A number of prominent Brazilian artists, and some European counterparts, were invited to decorate the new theater. The bust in the picture is a good example of the luxurious decoration of this theater.

355: Estácio de Sá monument

The region of Rio de Janeiro was discovered by the Portuguese on the first day of 1502. But it took more than six decades before the city of Rio de Janeiro (São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro) was founded by Estácio de Sá, who was in charge to make an end to the French occupation of the region. The founding date is the first of March 1565.  In the decisive battle against the French and their indigenous allies, on 20 January 1567, he was hit in the eye by a poisoned arrow and died one month later. When the city wanted to honor Estácio at the celebration of the fourth centenary of Rio, people asked openly why there was no statue of the City’s founder. They tried to obtain an image of Estácio, but failed. Instead, a triangular obelisk was created by architect Lucio Costa, with a large room at the base of this obelisk. The monument is located at Aterro do Flamengo, along the Guanabara Bay.

When you want to go from the center of Rio de Janeiro to Copacabana Beach, it is probable that your journey will follow the long Aterro do Flamengo. At the beginning of this urban park that is flanked by wide avenues, you will find the Museu do Arte Moderna, and next to it the immense monument that commemorates the participation and losses of Brazil in the Second World War: the ‘Monumento aos Mortos da Segunda Guerra Mundial” or “Monumento as Pracinhas”.  The below grade mausoleum holds the remains of 468 soldiers of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force that died in action in Italy. Outside, there is the 31 meter high monumental portal, a granite statue representing the soldiers of the land, naval, and air forces, an abstract sculpture that represents the Brazilian Air Force, and a large mosaic that honors both the navy and merchant marine who died at sea. A long, shallow pool allows natural light in the mausoleum and regulates the temperature. At the moment of the picture, a sea gull rested on the margin of the pool.

127. Monument at Praça do Papa

JANUARY 2007: Monument at Praça do Papa

This apparently flaming cross is located at Praça do Papa, near the entrance of Mangabeiras Park in Belo Horizonte. Until the open air mass – held by late Pope John Paul II in 1980 -, this square was called Praça Israel Pinheiro, named after a governor of the state of Minas Gerais, of which Belo Horizonte is the capital. The mass was witnessed by hundreds of thousands, who heard the Pope’s legendary words: “Que Belo Horizonte!”. As a reminder of this memorable mass a monument was erected 9 (designed by Ricardo Carvão) , including this cross. Behind the cross is a high metal bar, which is illuminated at night. Until 22 December, the square hosted the ‘Vila dos Sonhos’ (Village of Dreams) event, which attracted many children (and their parents) with enchanting decorations and an interesting entertainment program.

Travel in Brazil: Campo Grande (MS), 2011

CAMPO GRANDE (MS)

The city of Campo Grande was founded in 1899. In 1977, Campo Grande became the capital of the newly formed state of Mato Grosso do Sul, dismembered from Mato Grosso. The city was planned and contains a vast green area within the city limits. The 119 hectare Parque das Nações Indígenas (Park of the Indigenous People) is considered as one of the largest urban parks (within the city limits) in the world.
Inside the park, not far from Shopping Center Campo Grande, an obvious statue is located on an small island. An Indian hunter on a horse. A typical horse that can be found in the Pantanal Wetlands, located in Mato Grosso do Sul and neighboring states.
The official name for this monument is ‘Monumento ao Índio Guaicurú’.
Brazilian poet Manuel de Barros wrote about the Indian horseman.
