374: Edifício Niemeyer
The phograph clearly shows the contours of a car seat with the headrest. It’s a windshield of a car, in which the Niemeyer Building is reflected. That day, it was sunny with a clear blue sky. Niemeyer Building, or Edifício Niemeyer in Portuguese, is located at Praça da Liberdade. Projected one decade of the Pampulha Architectonic Complex, the Niemeyer Building was built on the site of former Dolabela Palacete. Niemeyer got his inspiration by the natural curves of the mountain range that borders the city. When you look at the building, you would count fifteen floors. However, there are only eight floors, thanks to Baroque art and illusionism.

304: Hotel Tijuco
Diamantina is a mining town at about three hundred kilometers northeast of Belo Horizonte. The city, located in the scenic Jequitinhonha Valley, has a long history of diamond mining. The earth’s riches were transported via ‘Estrada Real’ (Royal Road) to the ports of Paraty or Rio de Janeiro, from where it was shipped to Europe. Nowadays, the town attracts many tourists thanks to its well-preserved historic center, and thanks to cultural events. The Tijuco Hotel was designed by the well-known architect Oscar Niemeyer in the middle of the last century. The hotel is now a National Historical Monument in the city, which has been included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1999.

172. Clouds and palm trees
SEPTEMBER 2008: Clouds and palm trees
Casa do Baile, freely translated as: dance hall, is considered as one of the architectonic highlights at Lake Pampulha in Belo Horizonte. It was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in the forties of the past century. Initially, the Casa served as a meeting point for dancing people. Nowadays, the Casa hosts a wide range of exhibitions, mainly modern art. The round building with the waving roof that extends over a row of columns are typical for Niemeyer`s work, and in concordance with the irregular shape of the artificial lake. The round and waving shapes are inspiring for interesting compositions, as seen on this picture, in combination with palm trees in a straight line. The open space in the middle shows the image of a slightly clouded sky, late in the afternoon.

DECEMBER 2006: Church mirror
One of the most remarkable churches you can think of is located in Belo Horizonte, at the margin of Pampulha Lake. A church with a separate tower and cross, a church with an undulating roof, as if they were waves on a stormy lake. It is a masterpiece of architect Oscar Niemeyer. The São Francisco de Assis (St. Francis) Church is open for visitors, but it is not allowed to take photos inside. You will have to try through the windows. I had the misfortune that these windows reflected the light. They reflected the image of Pampulha Lake, and the IATE Clube, also designed by Niemeyer. The church attracts many visitors, and one of them was nice enough to walk through my image.

Lagoa (Lake) da Pampulha is an artificial lake, which is located north of the center of Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais. Along the lake, there are a number of buildings that were designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. For example, the little São Francisco Church, the Cassino (now a Modern Arts museum), Casa do Baile (now an exhibition center). The perimeter of the lake is more than eighteen kilometers long. The local Zoo, Botanical Garden, and an Ecological Garden are located along this lake. Nature is not restricted to these gardens, but is abundantly found along the margin of the lake. Wild flowers and trees, and some that have been planted. Like these blue lilies. They are not only attractive to our eyes, but also for the busy bees…

From a distance, it appears that a flying saucer had landed at the margin of the Guanabara Bay, in Niterói. According to some – unverified – sources, it was indeed the sight of a UFO, which inspired Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer to design this particular shape of the Museum of Contemporary Arts (Museu de Arte Contemporânea) in Niterói. He later explained that it was just easy to design this project, when he was overseeing the Guanabara Bay with the mountains at the background. With the round-shaped museum, he tried to preserve the uniqueness of the landscape. The construction started in 1991, and was inaugurated in 1996. The structure of the museum, which has a diameter of 50 meters, is supported by a column with a diameter of 9 meters. The complex is 16 meters high. The museum is reflected in a pool that surrounds the cylindrical base. A meandering access slope of almost 100 meters leads to the entrance of the exposition hall. The museum is now a landmark in Niterói, and is considered as one of the masterpieces of Oscar Niemeyer, who is 104 now (in 2012), and still active.
The original picture was taken in October 2007.

Oscar Niemeyer in his ‘disco voador’
Without doubt, the small Igreja São Francisco de Assis in the Pampulha District, may be considered as one of the landmarks of Belo Horizonte. The light blue color, the tower and cross that are separated, the roof that consists of four round arcs. Architect Oscar Niemeyer, now 104, designed the church, and a number of other buildings along an artificial lake, Lagoa da Pampulha. Oscar became more famous thanks to his participation in the construction of Brasília, capital of Brazil. Artist Cândido Portinari was responsible for the paintings inside and outside the church. The little garden was created by Roberto Burle Marx. The church was finished in 1943, but only in 1959, the church was consecrated. The archbishop of Belo Horizonte was opposed against the revolutionary design. Only recently, the church was renovated, and now attracts many Brazilian and foreign visitors. The original picture was taken in June 2006

Casa do Baile, Pampulha. The Casa do Baile (Ballroom) by Oscar Niemeyer, the most famous architect in Brazil, originally was designed for dancing events. It is one of the constructions by Niemeyer along the artificial Pampulha lake.
Nowadays, small exhibitions about architecture, design, art, or photography take place. The Casa do Baile also has a small garden, with some flowers, trees, and plants. One of the most colorful is the African lily, the Agapanthus africanus, a wonderful lily specimen that is commonly found in many gardens and parks in Brazil and abroad.
