354: Palm tree reflection
When I lived in Belo Horizonte, I often spent my Sundays in the center of the enormous city. On pleasant, sunny days I walked through the Avenida Afonso Pena, all the way to the end at Praça da Bandeira: a distance of about six kilometers. There I continued my walking tour via a climbing street to the entrance of city park Mangabeiras. After this effort – some friends told me that I was nuts to walk this long distance – I often went to the stand where refreshing açai was sold. After having consumed this delicious energy bomb, I started my exploration through the park. With my camera in hand I searched for interesting compositions, as I saw this water reflection of small palm trees in a pond.

Palm trees are associated with subtropical and tropical areas. Many dream of being in tropical paradises with white beaches and swaying palms. In Brazil, I visited a number of these beach paradises, where vast palm tree fields lay just behind the white beaches, such as in Alagoas, Pernambuco and Paraíba. There are nearly three hundred different palm trees in Brazil, of which just over one hundred are endemic. The palm trees are not only located along the beaches, but virtually at every imaginable location in the country. As mentioned along the beaches, but also along rivers and streams, in the jungles, in the woods, in the arid grasslands, in the mountains. You will also find many palm trees in the cities, like the palm tree blossom on the photo was found in the Botanical Garden in Belo Horizonte.

In April 2010, I was invited to attend a family party in a country house in Pitangui, at 125 km from Belo Horizonte. A chartered bus took us to the party venue where lunch was waiting for us: the traditional feijoada, the Brazilian bean stew. In the afternoon, many guests entertained themselves in the pool, while I was accompanying a group to the village of Pitangui. The evening was filled with music and dance. The night was pretty cold; in the morning there was even ripening on grass leaves. The sun was already exuberant, the air warmed up quickly . The stationary pond water was an ideal mirror for the sunbathing palm trees.

In the popular Mangabeiras Park in Belo Horizonte you can find countless interesting compositions. Natural compositions of plants, leaves, insects, birds in their native habitat. Green mountain slopes in the south against clear blue skies, or skies filled with a rich variety of cloud shapes; in the north the vast skyline of Belo Horizonte. Also attracts less advanced compositions, including water reflections, attracts my attention. The reflection of this palm tree in the pond water became one of my favorite photographs of that year.
